The central themes to the DLC share many similarities to the premise of Momotaro, a traditional Japanese Folktale. Read on for all of the potential DLC connections including new Tera Forms, a Peach Fairy Mythical and Momotaro Story Lore!
The Teal Mask and Momotaro Connections
The Story May Mimic Momotaro’s Journey
The Teal Mask offers a new adventure where you'll be joining an outdoors study program in the Land of Kitakami held jointly between their academy and another school. Due to various similarities with the Legend of Momotaro including the 3 Pokemon that look very similar to his companions (a Dog, Monkey and Pheasant), as well as a Pokemon that looks like an Oni (Ogre) there is speculation that perhaps we will need to befriend these 3 Pokemon in some way in order to take on Ogerpon!
Momotaro's Companions as Pokemon: a Dog, a Monkey and a Pheasant
New Pokemon and Momotaro Character Equivalent | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|
Pokemon | Ogerpon | Okidogi | Munkidori | Fezandipiti |
Character | Ogre | Dog | Monkey | Pheasant |
Four new Pokémon based on characters from the Legend of Momotaro named Okidogi, Munkidori, Fezandipiti and Ogerpon are confirmed to appear in the DLC. Ogerpon is based on the antagonist of the story, the Ogre, which Momotaro (the protagonist) needs to defeat with the help of his 3 new animal friends, a dog (Okidogi), a Monkey (Munkidori) and a Pheasant (Fezandipity).
This has led people to speculate that perhaps you will be given one of these 3 Pokemon as a kind of new starter, akin to the way Kubfu is gifted to you in Pokemon Sword and Shield's DLC. Alternatively, you may need to aquire all 3 of these Pokemon first in order to fight the final boss Ogerpon, ala Regigigas and the Regi Trio in Pokemon Platinum.
Mask Connection to Momotaro
Important Element in Japanese Festival Culture
Masks are not a feature in the original tale of Momotaro. Masks are however an important cultural element in traditional Japanese festivals and performances. As the player will be sent to the land of Kitakami and there is a festival element with Yatai (traditional Japanese stalls) and Yukata (traditional Japanese garment), Masks are very fitting. Ogerpon's mask design also has a Tera Crystal motif, leading fans to speculate that there could be some connection to the Terastallization mechanic.
New Tera Forms for the Starter Pokemon?

The Paldean Starter Pokemon all share a mask motif in their designs. This combined with the Tera Crystal on Ogerpon's Mask, could be an indication that the starter Pokemon will be able to unlock some kind of new Tera Form, Type or Mechanic, perhaps in the same way that Gigantamaxed Pokemon had a different appearance and exclusive move to their regular Dynamaxed counterparts in Pokemon Sword and Shield!
Other New Pokemon Speculation Based on Momotaro
Additional 'Oni' (Ogre) Pokemon
In the traditional tale of Momotaro, there is not just one Oni (Ogre), but rather a group of them which terrorize the village. It is therefore likely that we will see additional Ogre-like Pokemon in addition to Ogerpon. As Ogerpon appears to have a connection to the Grass Type with its green coloration and leaf like appearance, perhaps these other Oger Pokemon could be Water and Fire Type to constitute the basic elements.
A Peach-Themed Fairy Type Mythical Pokemon
*The image depicted above is of Shiny Celebi
In the original Momotaro, the main protagonist is born from a mythical Peach, bestowed with magical powers from the Gods. In the popular anime film Momotaro's Divine Sea Warriors, there is a Peach Fairy who helps Momotaro and his friends on his quest. This may look somewhat similar to shiny Celebi, which is an Onion-Fairy Pokemon.
