Sudden Departures of Even Veteran Workers
According to Kotaku senior reporter Ethan Gach, Blizzard has reportedly laid off some of the Hearthstone team’s developers. A total of ten people have been laid off without notice as part of a restructuring within the company.
"Organizational changes were made to the Hearthstone team", Blizzard explained to Kotaku, "as a result a small number of roles have become redundant. We want to thank these employees for their many contributions."
Among those laid off was tools engineer, Hunter C., who had posted about the sudden layoff on their LinkedIn profile.
The tools engineer said they had been with Blizzard Entertainment for 18 and a half years. They further shared that they had been laid off without notice as the Hearthstone team is "apparently being "restructured" and that their role as a Tools Engineer was no longer needed.
A Senior Member Among Those Affected
Hearthstone senior producer Joe Belousek also posted about being unexpectedly laid off from the company. While not employed for nearly as long as Hunter, it shows that the restructuring affected those across the board.
The layoffs were reported on the same day as Blizzard announced the return of Chris Metzer as executive director of Warcraft. Blizzard launched a major update for Hearthstone in August 2023 along with a new game mode in the few days following. However, there have been no further reports on future plans for Hearthstone, nor anything about these developments so far.
