Star Wars Outlaws Overview
Star Wars Outlaws is an open-world action-adventure game set in the vast Star Wars galaxy. Developed by Massive Entertainment and published by Ubisoft, the game is the first open-world Star Wars title, offering players a chance to explore planets, spaceports, and star systems. Set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, the game focuses on a new protagonist, Kay Vess, a scoundrel navigating the galaxy's criminal underworld. Accompanied by her loyal alien companion Nix, Kay takes on high-stakes missions, evades the Empire, and outsmarts rival syndicates.
The game emphasizes player choice, allowing you to shape Kay’s journey as she takes daring risks to secure freedom and wealth. Outlaws combines gunfights, stealth mechanics, vehicular combat, and space exploration, with a narrative deeply tied to the morally complex world of the Star Wars underworld.

Star Wars Outlaws Gameplay
The game presents a seamless transition between planetary exploration and space travel. Each planet is a sandbox, featuring bustling cities, dangerous wilderness areas, and hidden syndicate hideouts. As Kay, you can freely roam these environments, taking on story missions, side quests, or simply exploring for resources and secrets.
Players can travel between star systems aboard Kay’s customized ship, the Trailblazer. The ship supports ship-to-ship combat, smuggling activities, and docking at spaceports for trade or intel gathering.
Combat in Star Wars Outlaws blends third-person shooting with tactical gameplay. Kay wields a blaster with upgradeable attachments, where players can take advantage of cover systems during firefights or approach stealthily, using distractions or sneak attacks. Nix, Kay’s companion, plays a pivotal role in combat, assisting with distractions, retrieving items, or attacking enemies.
Kay can engage in dogfights with TIE Fighters, rival syndicate ships, or bounty hunters. Kay’s abilities, weapons, and gear are customizable through upgrades earned during missions or exploration. The Trailblazer is also upgradable, allowing for enhanced speed, durability, and firepower. Nix is not just a sidekick but an integral part of gameplay. The little creature can scout ahead, solve puzzles, and provide emotional support to Kay in her loneliest moments. Players can direct Nix in real-time, adding a layer of strategy during exploration and combat.

Star Wars Outlaws Reviews
A Mixed Bag

Forbes highlighted the vibrant world of Star Wars Outlaws, stating that it feels alive and immersive. They also praised Kay and Nix as likable characters but expressed frustration with some gameplay mechanics, such as combat and the instant-fail missions tied to stealth failures.
On Metacritic, the game holds a generally favorable score of 75/100. Critics commonly praise its engaging narrative and unique approach to storytelling, but many lament the lack of complexity in gameplay. Meanwhile, player reception on Steam has been mixed, with an average rating of 3/5 stars. Players frequently commend the game’s world-building but criticize its gameplay mechanics and note recurring technical issues that affect performance.

Star Wars Outlaws Trivia
⚫︎ During early development, the idea for Kay’s companion was originally a droid, as droids are iconic in the Star Wars universe. However, the team wanted to introduce something fresh and unique, which led to the creation of Nix, a new species designed specifically for the game. Nix was inspired by a mix of real-world creatures, including foxes, meerkats, and dogs. The developers spent considerable time studying these animals' behaviors to make Nix’s movements and personality feel authentic
⚫︎ Star Wars Outlaws is packed with easter eggs and nods to the broader Star Wars lore. From subtle references to classic characters like Han Solo and Jabba the Hutt to hidden relics from the High Republic era, exploration rewards players with deep connections to the galaxy's history.
⚫︎ The game’s original score takes inspiration from John Williams’ iconic Star Wars compositions. The developers worked with Wilbert Roget II, Cody Matthew Johnson and a full orchestra to create a soundtrack that feels familiar, while incorporating unique motifs for Kay, Nix, and the criminal underworld.
