Pokémon Pokopia Overview
Pokémon Pokopia is a life simulation game by Koei Tecmo’s Omega Force and Gamefreak for the Nintendo Switch 2, released on March 5, 2026. Unlike traditional Pokémon games, it focuses on crafting and building a paradise for Pokémon.
Players take on the role of a Ditto to restore an island’s habitats and shape it into a home for Pokémon. Ditto can gather, build, craft, and, by learning all sorts of moves from its peers, terraform the island. With a block-based sandbox world to build on and a cast of friendly creatures to interact with, players can grow their community and attract even more Pokémon as development and restoration continue.
Pokopia will feature a 20-40 hour story campaign. Even after the credits roll, the game will continue to introduce more content, similar to other life simulation and sandbox games like Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Pokémon Pokopia Gameplay

In Pokémon Pokopia, players are tasked with building a paradise on an island to attract Pokémon. It focuses on gathering resources, crafting, and building, without any traditional combat. Players learn moves from other Pokémon, which are used to solve environmental puzzles and manage resources to unlock new areas and progress in the game.
Using materials gathered from the environment, items and furniture can be made and, eventually, even be placed inside a house. Using the power gained from Pokémon peers, players can also till the fields to grow crops or navigate across the sea and sky as Lapras or Dragonite, respectively.
Pokémon Pokopia Characters
Ditto

At the heart of the game is the player as Ditto, who dons the appearance of its former Trainer and can use human tools. It uses its powers to restore and revitalize a desolate land, transforming it into a cozy utopia for Pokémon. Abilities include imitating the moves of other Pokémon, as well as inhaling objects and storing them in its body for later use.
Professor Tangrowth

Professor Tangrowth was the only remaining Pokémon before Ditto arrived. He serves as the primary guide for the player, akin to the human professors in other Pokémon games. His elderly, scholarly appearance sets him apart from other Tangrowth.
Peakychu

Peakychu is a Pikachu variant who sacrificed her electricity to help her sick friends, leaving her pale and drained of her spark.
Mosslax

Mosslax is another Pokémon unique to the game, a variant of Snorlax. After losing a fight, it tried to sleep off its bad mood, but during its prolonged slumber, moss gradually grew all over its body.
Smearguru

Smearguru is a Smeargle covered in red, blue, green, and yellow paint. Its role in the game is to repaint furniture with new colors or designs.
Pokémon Pokopia Reviews
As of March 2026, Pokémon Pokopia has become the highest-rated Pokémon title, with a Metascore of 89 and a user score of 8.6. It bested the mainline games Pokémon X and Y, Pokémon Sun and Moon, and Pokémon Black and White.
Game8's L A R Opalec opened their review with a warning from the get-go about how addictive yet rewarding Pokémon Pokopia was. The game made up for its high price with 40 hours of main story campaign that could stretch to the hundreds, providing a sense of satisfaction that paralleled conquering the Pokémon League.
Giving Pokémon Pokopia a 10/10, Kate Harrold of GAMINGbible went on to describe how it could be a Game of the Year (GOTY) contender due to the absence of any weak link. They went on to describe how it made the cozy formula more magical with Pokémon.
Several other critic reviews also gave the game a perfect score. VGC's Jordan Middler commended it for blending the best of life simulation games with Pokémon charm, making it easily appealing to both the Pokémon and cozy game communities. Zackerie Fairfax from Dexerto believed it to be the best Pokémon game on the Switch 2 platform, even as it presented a fresh territory by flipping the script. Instead of protagonists saving the world from cataclysmic dangers, the protagonist had to rebuild it after the devastation had already occurred.
Furthermore, Lottie Lynn of Eurogamer deemed it among the Pokémon franchise's strongest spin-offs. Despite being set in the Kanto region, it proved more than capable of standing on its own and without being overshadowed by the iconic Gen 1 games, cementing its place as the ideal release for the franchise's 30th anniversary.
User reviews also reflected similar sentiments, with a good majority agreeing with its addictive, enjoyable gameplay loop that left players glued to the Switch 2 far longer than intended. Contributing to the hours they poured into the game was the massive amount of content that evoked pure joy with each discovery.

Pokémon Pokopia Trivia
⚫︎ Pokopia is not the first spin-off Pokémon game to introduce alternate variants, like Peakychu and Mosslax. Primal Dialga from Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Sky, Shadow Lugia from XD: Gales of Darkness, and Shadow Mewtwo from Pokkén Tournament are among them.
⚫︎ Koei Tecmo's Omega Force previously co-developed Square Enix's Dragon Quest Builders 2 before working on Pokopia. Both games share the core gameplay of crafting, block-based building, and world restoration.
⚫︎ Gamefreak's Shigeru Ohmori says that reminiscing about his time working on Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire led to his creation of Pokopia's prototype.
⚫︎ According to Ditto’s Pokédex entries across the mainline series Pokémon games, it tends to get details wrong when it tries to transform using only its memory as a reference.
⚫︎ Professor Tangrowth has a disc-like item called a TM stuck to one of its hairs. TMs, or Technical Moves, are used to teach new moves to Pokémon in the series.
