MultiVersus Reviews
Great Game With Terrible Grind
MultiVersus received positive reception for its extended cast of available characters and for its great gameplay upon its full release. However, many criticized its Free-to-Play model, specifically locking characters behind a significant grind in order to unlock them. We at Game8 praised its easy to pick up but difficult to master gameplay that applies to its massive roster, but gaining access to said massive roster is a huge grind to perform, even with how fun the game is.
IGN gave it a ‘Good’ at 7/10, calling it an entertaining game drowned out by the tedious grind. Kotaku is conflicted with the game, mentioning how they want to praise and keep playing it, but outside of the PvP battles, it does so poorly that they feel like it’s ethically wrong to do so. SportsIllustrated scores it a 5/10, pointing out how after an entire year of inactivity, the game got worse during its full launch.
The conflicts follow through to aggregation reviews. Metacritic] lists the game’s critic score aat 75/100, being ‘Generally Favorable.’ However, its user score paints a different picture at 5.6/10. Getting a Mixed or Average rating. The same goes with its [Steam reviews, where All reviews average into a Mostly Positive rating, but Recent Reviews perform poorer at ‘Mixed.’
