Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising (otherwise known as Versus Rising or abbreviated as GBVS:R) is a 2D fighting game released for the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and the PC on December 14, 2024. Developed by Arc System works, it serves as a sequel to the first Granblue Fantasy Versus fighting game and features the world and characters from the original Granblue Fantasy action adventure RPG series by Cygames. It is the third overall installment from the franchise and precedes the most recent mainline title of Granblue Fantasy: Relink.
The game continues the alternate reality plotline of the first fighting game, where the resurrection of Lucelius was approaching. Meanwhile, the ever-scheming Belial still runs rampant, seeking to have total control of the Sky Realm.The Singularities of Gran and Djeeta must once again band together with other heroes to fight for the sake of the floating worlds. Players can select Gran, Djeeta, or other various characters from the Granblue Fantasy franchise and play against each other in 1v1 matches. Take down your opponents and reign supreme in the world of Granblue!

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is a 2D fighting game featuring various Granblue Fantasy characters. Players can choose between an expansive base roster or 28 characters, as well as arriving DLC characters in the future. Matches are strictly 1v1, where the player who first wins 2 out of 3 rounds is proclaimed the winner.
The title is Arc System Work’s easiest game for newcomers to date, as it features a Simple Input mode which simplifies character inputs for players. This allows beginners to execute typically difficult moves compared to the manual motion and button sequences traditionally required from complicated moves. Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising also has crossplay enabled, as well as rollback netcode, allowing players to have seamless online matches with one another regardless of platform and location across the world.

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising provides an upgraded version of its predecessor with superb graphics and seamless online gameplay, earning praise from critics and the playerbase alike. Our reviewer at Game8 gave the game a 90/100, taking note of its ability to simplify the game mechanics to entice new players. All the while, it manages to maintain the complexity and depth for long-time players without compromising the difficulty.
IGN] rates it an ‘Amazing’ game at 9/10, citing how it manages to reach the full potential that many glimpsed from its predecessor, being able to implement a deep roster of characters and great netcode. However, [Silicon Era gives it am middling 7/10, where they openly state the game isn’t for them as there are plenty of filler content that bloats the game, making its gorgeous 2d anime art style its only saving grace. The Gamer follows suit, rating it only at 3.5/5, pointing out the unfairness of the simple inputs compared to the technical. They explain that players with the simple inputs are no longer dealt with subtle cooldowns, thus placing technical input players at a clear disadvantage by the game itself.
In Metacritic, critics have an aggregated score of 78/100, giving it a ‘Generally Favorable’ verdict, where many make note of its beautiful visuals. However, users have voted for a ‘Mixed or Average’ rating at 6.5/10, where they criticize not the gameplay, but the bloated screens, menus, and bloated content detracting from the main 1v1 fighting game.
