SUPER CRAZY RHYTHM CASTLE Overall - 70/100

SUPER CRAZY RHYTHM CASTLE (SCRC) is great and quirky fun, with unique minigames incorporated among the classic rhythm game formula that encourages teamwork and fast reactions. With a wide selection of assorted songs from various genres, it has tracks for just about anyone. The price is steep, however, and shelling out $39.99 for a casual rhythm party game is hard to justify.

SUPER CRAZY RHYTHM CASTLE Story - 7/10

As a rhythm game, having a straightforward story is your best bet, as the main attraction will be the songs and the gameplay. SCRC, however, manages to sprinkle in the perfect comedy throughout its story and scenarios. Its presence elevates the already chaotic and fun gameplay experience with goofy slapstick visual comedy and funny absurdist humor.

SUPER CRAZY RHYTHM CASTLE Gameplay - 8/10

SCRC doesn’t necessarily innovate the rhythm game genre but rather adds special mechanics on top of having to hit incoming notes. Some of these minigames require the involvement of additional sets of eyes and hands, and thus cause disorientation among teammates – all of which make for good fun.

SUPER CRAZY RHYTHM CASTLE Visuals - 7/10

SCRC doesn’t have spectacularly breathtaking or unique visuals, but it’s perfectly stylized for the game it’s supposed to be. The art direction enables the comedic moments to hit, and their good manipulation of King Ferdinand’s facial expressions leads to a lot of enjoyable scenes. The character designs are somewhat all over the place, with no clear link nor explanation to the world or story, but they’re still very distinct to immediately distinguish from each other in times of chaos.

SUPER CRAZY RHYTHM CASTLE Audio - 9/10

SCRC’s tracklist is composed of various songs of differing genres, ranging from licensed songs from indie artists, original music, classical music, and even music from Konami’s extensive game catalog. This rich and varied soundtrack allows for a good time to vibe and hit rhythm notes to, no matter the genre. However, a lot of the songs would often get interrupted by the unique minigames presented by the game, and they often deter or outright ruin the flow and momentum of the atmosphere the music worked hard to create.

SUPER CRAZY RHYTHM CASTLE Value for Money - 4/10

SCRC features numerous good songs and tons of enjoyable energy and gameplay, but the $39.99 price tag is very steep for a party game. The price could be a result of the numerous song licenses it must have needed to acquire, but to place it as high for light-hearted entertainment is a big ask, and is a risk factor for the game.

SUPER CRAZY RHYTHM CASTLE Review: Not Your Typical Party Game

SUPER CRAZY RHYTHM CASTLE (or SCRC) is a very unique rhythm game, as it doubles as a party game. Unfortunately, I have no friends, and the entirety of this playthrough was just me and Hand Dog, the AI partner given on certain select songs. However, Hand Dog only helps around here and there, and I was stuck by my lonesome for the majority of tracks. How did I fare? Let’s just say I have never felt like I wanted friends more than playing SCRC.

Plain and simple, the game is very chaotic and fun with tons of slapstick comedy and witty humor. The story might be a little straightforward in terms of execution, but it will definitely get a chuckle or two out of everyone from how good and balanced the writing is. The only downside would be the pacing of the dialogue, as they’re all timed for some reason, with no ability for the player to be the one to advance to the next line. They provide a fast-forward option, but I would argue it’s still on the slow side. The reason for this could be that the developers and/or writers prefer to use their own timing for comedic purposes. But not all dialogue in the game aims to be funny, so why still implement it in normal conversations?

Nevertheless, SCRC’s rhythm games are still great fun, with plenty of puzzling gimmicks and messy(in a good way) minigames that cause disarray during gameplay. The potential chaos among team members is undeniable, as even playing solo will get you confused and panicky with all the tense timings and silly mechanics.

The game’s OST is full of bangers, with so many songs and genres to listen to and nod your head along to while playing. I go in-depth with the music further in the review, but it still needs to be mentioned that assembling a tracklist like this is a worthy feat that SCRC achieved. Linked above is my personal favorite song from the OST, “Gold” by Lizzy Ashliegh. It’s an undeniable groove, and it should be your favorite too.

In conclusion, I need friends.

Okay, jokes aside, SUPER CRAZY RHYTHM CASTLE is still such an enjoyable and fun game, even playing solo. With so many good songs in the OST, and very good humor that doesn’t overstay its welcome. The rhythm minigames are fun and unique, ranging from trivial goofy fun, to stress-filled challenges, perfect for a party game. For its price of $39.99, I’d recommend finding three people who have diverse music tastes for everyone to pitch in $10 each and play locally.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some friends to try and find.

Pros of SUPER CRAZY RHYTHM CASTLE

Things SUPER CRAZY RHYTHM CASTLE Got Right
Checkmark Great Selection of Music
Checkmark Good Amount of Quirky Humor

Great Selection of Music

Right off the gate, the main menu’s music just instills energy, signaling what kind of life and spirit this game has. SCRC hosts three dozen tracks for its OST, and every single one is a banger. They list the entire soundtrack that manages to “cover all four of the pillars of modern music: rock, pop, electronic, and flamenco.” A good handful of songs are from indie bands and artists, while there are a couple of songs borrowed from KONAMI’s gaming franchise Castlevania. Not every track is going to be a hit for everyone, but the high amount of songs and genres allocated within ensures at least one track to be enjoyable.

Good Amount of Quirky Humor

Normally with these types of games that have “zany” humor, their “funny” antics often take a step too far and become overdone or incessant to the point where they end up being obnoxious. They would think that the presence of jokes and references to pop culture, or just modern meme-culture, will be enough to garner some good laughs and be proclaimed funny. This isn’t the case with SCRC, as its humor is entirely self-contained, paced well, and actually hits. It might cause gut-busting belly-ache-inducing laughter every time, but it uses great visual comedy and well-written jokes at precise amounts, perfect for lighthearted fun for a group of friends just wanting to mess around.

Cons of SUPER CRAZY RHYTHM CASTLE

Things SUPER CRAZY RHYTHM CASTLE Can Improve
Checkmark Co-op is a Hard Requirement

Co-op is a Hard Requirement

This isn’t a drastic negative, as SCRC IS primarily a party game. Those who wish to try the game solo, however, will find it very difficult to do so. Some songs can easily be done by your lonesome, but the overwhelming majority of songs hinge on the requirement that you have at least two players participating to make the gameplay flow as intended. There are countless songs that require you to leave the station(where you hit the music notes), to perform minigames to either maintain progress, rid of obstacles that impede progress, or prevent instant game-overs

On select levels, you ARE provided with an AI partner, Hand Dog. However, Hand Dog is only present when there are minigames that require two moving characters at the same time. For those that can be multitasked, Hand Dog is nowhere to be seen. Playing alone makes it virtually impossible to get a high ranking on said majority of songs, as the multitasking between the rhythm games and the minigames gets more and more complicated as the game progresses.

There are also onscreen details that you’d need to pay attention to when they pop up into the screen while performing the rhythm game. A solo player might brush them off as an unnecessary distraction and ignore them, wanting to focus on the song. Afterward, they might realize that they had failed the song, as they needed to unmount from the rhythm game and interact with said distraction to have the notes they were hitting actually count.

A second set of eyes is instrumental to immediately understand the unique mechanics of each song. Attempting to do so alone is a steep uphill challenge for those truly dedicated and hardcore enough to fail over and over again in a casual rhythm party game.

Is SUPER CRAZY RHYTHM CASTLE Worth It?

No. It’s SUPER Fun, but That Price Tag is CRAZY

SCRC has many songs and is a good time to be had, but for $39.99 is an instant turn-off. Even with all of the game’s excellent qualities, it would be best to be bought at a lower price during a sale, at around the $15-20 range.

You could theorize that price is due to all the music that the game uses, having to shell out funds to purchase licenses for almost all of the music from artists. But to recoup sales should not fall onto base price being high, but rather by being very accessible for people and friends to easily buy and play.

It’s unfortunate for a good party game to be overpriced, as it ends up gate-keeping itself from its target audience of casual fans.
