Just a Funny Little Shadow Trying to Make His Way Back

Image

This game was already making waves back in 2021 when it was first announced. It became a mainstay at indie showcases and other shows since the game would pop up at several different events through the years. Now, in 2024, the game finally gets a playable demo and has an actual release date! During this year’s Steam Next Fest, I was able to play the game’s demo in its entirety, and I have to say it has everything to make it a great platformer with its stunning visuals, tricky puzzles, and serene music.

What Happens if a Soul is Separated for Too Long?

Image

The story of the game is told through different scenes during gameplay, and I’m honestly surprised at how the story is slightly more compelling than it should be, especially since there’s no voice acting in the game. A schim is the soul of a being, and it will always be tied to their host. After a series of unfortunate events, a fall that the host human suffered caused their schim to separate. Afterwards, it becomes a story of the schim trying to go back to its host by using the shadows of everything around it. It’s nothing too grand or too compelling, but I’m still surprised at how they were able to tell a story, especially with how minimalistic the designs are.

Simple and Stunning Gameplay and Visuals

Image

The gameplay is very simple, make your way to the objective by using the different shadows in each level. It starts off pretty easy, where you just need to properly space your jumps to get to the next level. Later on, however, the game starts throwing moving objects like cars, bikes, etc. to shape levels, and this is where the game shines.

Not only are the visuals amazing, but they also enhance the gameplay because of how the colors are used in different scenes and levels. While I’m sure that the concept of shadow jumping with platforming isn’t anything new, it still offers a unique and different experience with how it uses everyday objects and scenes to be the set pieces for each level.

Serene and Relaxing Music

Image

Not to mention that the music is amazing. The relaxing and feel good tones are a perfect match to the minimalistic design of the game. It took me longer to finish the demo because I was just vibing to the game’s music and was lulled into a relaxing trance.

This game has been in the oven for a long time since 2021, and it has racked up a couple of awards here and there to show for it. I’m glad that this game is finally about to see the light, since sticking to the shadows is certainly something I can get behind.
