Mafia: The Old Country Gameplay

Mafia: The Old Country is a linear, story-driven game centered on the narrative of Enzo’s rise within the Mafia in early 1900s Sicily. Similar to the Mafia games before it, the core gameplay loop revolves around progressing through a predetermined sequence of missions that advance the plot. The game provides opportunities to traverse the world by foot, car, or horseback, but these traversal methods serve primarily as a means to reach mission objectives or travel between story-relevant locations.

Combat in Mafia: The Old Country features both melee and ranged engagements, utilizing period-authentic weapons like stiletto blades and lupara shotguns. Players will find a cover-based shooting system for gunfights and knife duels in close quarters. Additionally, players can customize their firearms through various weapon modification options.

The game will also do away with the open-world structure of previous games. Exploration in Mafia: the Old Country is present but serves a different purpose than in other open-world games like Grand Theft Auto 6. While there is a world for players to explore, Hangar 13 president Nick Baynes emphasized in an interview with IGN that "as with Mafia 1 and 2, the focus is very, very firmly on the main story."

It does, however, have "family missions" that are integral to the player’s progression within the Torrisi crime family. "Family Missions" require balancing the needs of the criminal organization with personal goals, where failure can lead to consequences such as betrayal or lost opportunities.

Side activities include managing legitimate businesses as fronts for illegal operations, with a "Heat" level tracking police awareness and adapting their tactics accordingly. Environmental storytelling enriches exploration, offering discoverable backstories and secrets that can lead to unexpected mission opportunities or valuable resources .

Mafia: The Old Country Story Plot

Mafia: The Old Country tells the story of Enzo Favara, a young man navigating the criminal underworld of 1900s Sicily Unlike previous Mafia protagonists, Enzo’s origins lie not in urban crime but in the harsh realities of rural Sicilian life. He begins his journey in the sulfur mines, a historically significant industry in Sicily during this period. These mines, as highlighted in a developer interview with IGN, often employed young children known as "carusi."

Early in the story, his escape from his former life leads him to the Torrisi crime family, where he develops an ambition to rise through their ranks. The lengths he'd go to to achieve this, however, remain to be seen.
