Everything We Know About Life By You
Update - June 18, 2024
Paradox Interactive has announced that Life By You has been cancelled. Deputy CEO Mattias Lilja announced in their official forum that the team has decided to stop the project entirely as more time will not lead to the product that will get them to a version that they would be satisfied with, saying "However, when we come to a point where we believe that more time will not get us close enough to a into this project, especially when our decision comes so late in the process." Paradox also announced that the game was delayed a few weeks back, as they felt that the game was still lacking in certain important areas, saying "A few weeks back, we decided to hold off on an Early Access release in order to re-evaluate Life by You, as we still felt that the game was lacking in some key areas."
During this time, they re-evaluated the game as a whole because it became clear to the dev team that the time it would take to get the game to an acceptable state that they were in confident in will take longer than intended. Lilja ends the statement reiterating the difficulty in developing games and aims to get better in the process as there are no guarantees in the industry, saying "Games are difficult to get right, and we’ll definitely make mistakes, which, as these things go, always become painfully apparent in hindsight, but still shouldn’t reach this kind of magnitude regardless. We have to take a long and hard look at what led us here and see what changes we have to make to become better. In the end, our mission remains the same, and we’ll continue to take whatever steps we need to do just that."
In a separate press release posted in their official website, Paradox Interactive CEO Fredrik Wester disclosed the damage that Life By You has done to the company's financial saying, "We’ve performed poorly in recent releases, continued Wester. Even though we now start new projects in a different manner, it is clear that we must make further changes so that quality is more consistent and the promises we make to our players are met." Wester also said that they will be taking measures to look at how they manage and organize projects moving forward, saying "Moving forward, we should perform at a much higher level, and it’s obvious that we have work ahead of us."
