Jump Space Review [Early Access] | An Ambitious Space Invader

Jump Space
Release Date Gameplay & Story Pre-Order & DLC Early Access Review

Jump Space is a mission-based co-op FPS where teamwork is essential to survive. Read on to learn everything we know, our review of the demo, and more.

Everything We Know About Jump Space

Jump Space Plot

Image

Set in the vast expanse of space, you are part of a small crew of Atiran survivors who have decided to join the Resistance to go against the Legion, an army of machines that has since taken over several worlds. On the way to your rendezvous with the Resistance, you were ambushed by a pack of Legion fighters and crash-landed on an asteroid. What you find there, however, will change the fate of not only your crew but also of the whole galaxy.

As of writing, the game only has its first chapter available in Early Access. It was revealed in their roadmap that the game will most likely have at least 3 chapters leading up to the game’s full release.

Jump Space Gameplay

Image

Jump Space marries co-op shooters with sci-fi action elements, going beyond on-foot gunfights and taking battles to the air and even deep space. Battles will have players going toe-to-toe with different kinds of enemies as they fulfill different mission objectives in this dynamic PvE.

The gameplay is not limited to quick, adrenaline-fueled shootouts; success in Jump Space may mean exploring deep space and encountering enemies with ships of their own. The latest trailer has revealed that players and their teams can jump onto other ships and quickly take control of the crew and commandeer the enemy ship. This means that players will have to grapple and leap across the air, all while avoiding bullets and lasers and striking enemies before they can get to you.

In addition, the game includes extensive flying mechanics, allowing pilots to speed through space and engage in thrilling dogfights with enemy ships. To ensure your victory, you must outfit your ships with the best weapons and learn strategic maneuvers to avoid sustaining heavy damage. If you do get hit, you can repair your ship using scavenged parts. These parts can also be repurposed for upgrades depending on your needs and playstyle.

Jump Space Release Date

Image

Jump Space released in Early Access on September 19, 2025 for Xbox Series X|S and PC. The developers have mentioned that the game will be in Early Access for a minimum of five months, maybe longer.

Jump Space Review (Early Access)

Image

The success of co-op-oriented indie games has been thoroughly documented throughout the past few years. Games like Lethal Company, R.E.P.O., and PEAK are just a few of the success stories that many of us have probably heard or experienced. Each of them brings a unique vibe to the table, but more importantly, has that something that makes them memorable and fun for everyone.

Jump Space is a mission-based co-op FPS where you will take to the stars in your very own spaceship, either solo or in a group. What separates Jump Space from other co-op games is that it's a mix of FPS extraction shooter and spaceship management. After hearing that it was a mix of the extraction shooting aspect of Deep Rock Galactic and the ship management of Sea of Thieves, I knew I had to try it out as soon as possible.

Story is Getting There

Image

The overall narrative isn’t overly compelling, but it is refreshing to see that the game’s tutorial or prologue has an actual story behind it. While not spoiling anything crazy, the prologue sets up the game and how you get a ship to maintain, even giving you an idea of the world that Jump Space takes place in. After that, you work to upgrade your ship to be able to make contact with a resistance group that’s going against the Legion army.

There’s not much else to say about the narrative just yet since only the first chapter of the game is playable in Early Access. However, the worldbuilding is surprisingly well done, as it gives you enough information to see what’s at stake and what the world is like. Most co-op games would normally forego a narrative, and I will commend Keepsake Games for putting in the effort to set up an overarching narrative that will be developed over time.

Looks Good, Sounds Good, Runs Great

Image

In terms of its visuals, the game looks great. The main highlights are definitely the different environments that you get to explore. Additionally, the different skyboxes also add so much to the game’s lighting that it enhances the overall visual experience.

The audio design is pretty decent. There’s nothing to complain about other than maybe the use of AI voices, but nothing stands out either. The music and sound effects were all serviceable and not too memorable.

However, the most important thing to point out is its performance. The game runs very smoothly, even in missions when there are too many things shooting at you. This is a welcome thing to see in an Early Access title since normally you’d expect spotty optimization and framerate issues early on.

Extraction Shooter Meets Space Simulation

Image

The biggest appeal of Jump Space is its unique combination of extraction shooter and spaceship management. The gameplay loop involves players taking part in a string of missions that will have them transition from crewing to exploration.

Crewing may involve repairing certain ship components, crafting utility items for use in the field, piloting the ship, and even manning its guns. Battles against the Legion army will take place both on foot, where it’s mostly an FPS experience, and in space, where players will simultaneously participate in dogfights against Legion ships.

Image

Progression in the game will be upgrading your ship by scavenging and looting various sectors of the universe. Looted ship components can be found as well, and these can be installed into your ship to strengthen it. After accomplishing a string of missions, players will be rewarded with currency to upgrade their ship components, like upgrading its engines, its cannons, and even its generators.

The highlight of its gameplay is the seamless transition and the decisions you and your crew will make to address what needs to be done. It will be commonplace to be outgunned and outmanned in almost every mission. This means that there will be times during gameplay where enemies will be attacking on all fronts while you’re trying to fulfill objectives.

Image

This is where the game becomes the most engaging, as a crew will have to balance who’s going to try and do the objectives and who will be defending the ship. Sometimes, you’ll even need players to do the objectives on their own while other players pilot the ship and fend off Legion fighters and gunships.

Definitely Needs Some Adjustments

Image

It’s not a perfect game, however, which is to be expected from an Early Access title. It still has bugs like enemies passing through terrain, players getting stuck in environments and objects, and other expected issues that come with an Early Access title.

Outside of these bugs, the missions in the game are still fairly repetitive, and higher difficulty levels can be lengthy. Oftentimes, high-level missions will take about 40 minutes to an hour to complete, which is a commitment that might not be great for everyone.

Image

The progression is also quite spotty at the moment. The Early Access grants you the choice of being able to commandeer two different ships, the C-3 Catamaran and the D-4 Dart. Each of them has its own stats, but the former feels so much more superior than the latter. This is because the C-3 has way more components that you can use while being a jack-of-all-trades.

Additionally, the overall feel of the game still isn’t quite there. While the gunplay and movement are good, for the most part, there’s a certain floatiness to everything that it feels like there’s no impact to whatever it is you’re doing. Shooting enemy robots feels like you’re just tapping them with blasters and bullets, while moving around with gravity feels like you’re still floating in zero gravity.

Hyperjumping With Potential

Image

Jump Space is a unique experience. While the similarities are there with the likes of Void Crew and Wildgate, what sets it apart is that it's a fusion of genres, and it pulls it off quite well. The unexpected narrative and worldbuilding are already a great start to set up the game’s future story, and the presentation is also pretty good considering that it’s still in Early Access.

Not to mention that the game is just straight up fun, especially with friends. Keepsake Games has already put out a roadmap detailing their plans till 2026, meaning they’re in it for the long haul. It still has issues and bugs to address, sure, but this is an Early Access title that I’ll be keeping my eye on and maybe playing from time to time.
