Gears of War: E-Day appears poised to blend its hallmark third-person shooter mechanics with a renewed emphasis on horror, taking cues from the franchise’s earlier entries. While no gameplay footage has been revealed, developer The Coalition did mention in an interview with IGN that the team has revisited the series’ roots to capture the "kind of dark, almost horror-esque, scary moments" that stood out to them. How this translates to E-Day’s gameplay remains to be seen.
Regardless, gameplay is expected to retain the cover-based shooting mechanics that have long been central to the series, but The Coalition aims to enhance this foundation using the capabilities of Unreal Engine 5. The studio promised to "recreate and improve the series’ third-person action" while still staying authentic to its core.
Specific details about multiplayer remain undisclosed, but the game's campaign is expected to offer co-op, akin to previous entries. This would allow up to four players to team up and tackle the campaign together. However, the full extent of the multiplayer features in Gears of War: E-Day is still uncertain. Gears of War: E-Day takes players back 14 years before the events of the original game, chronicling the onset of the Locust War. Set on the planet Sera, the story follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, soldiers of the Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG), as they struggle to survive Emergence Day, as this event marks the sudden and violent rise of the Locust Horde, a subterranean race that launches a devastating assault on the surface world.
Set within the city of Kalona, an unexplored location within the franchise, the game will likely have players witness the early dynamics of Marcus and Dom’s partnership as they confront the overwhelming force of the Locust Horde and navigate the desperation of survival amidst collapsing societal structures.
