Dead by Daylight Gameplay
Dead by Daylight is an asymmetric 4vs1 survival-horror multiplayer game where a group of four Survivors must evade, outlast, or outrun the clutches of one powerful Killer and escape alive. Survivors must find 5 out of 7 randomly scattered generators in a given map, repair them until they’re fully operational, open the exit gates, and escape. Killers must use their unique powers to traverse the map, find Survivors, injure them until they’re decapacitated, and hang them onto hooks randomly scattered around the map in order to finish Sacrificing them to the Entity. Hooking a Survivor three times kills them and removes them from the game, reducing the total number of Survivors working together in a match.
Survivors
Survivors play in the third-person view, allowing players to look behind corners while hidden.
Though they have no unique powers, they can equip four perks that can be learned from playing other characters and levelling them up. Players can mix and match different perks for certain builds and playstyles that they prefer to run in games, allowing for a wildcard approach whether along or with teammates. They can also utilize various items that they can either bring into the match, or find during the game to use. Toolboxes help or modify generators or sabotage hooks, flashlights are able to blind or stun Killers by aiming directly at their eyes, and keys have various uses related to reconnaissance, or the ability to open the hatch.
Survivors can either crouch, crouch-walk, walk, and run, where running is the noisiest and leaves visibly scratch marks for the Killers to spot and follow them. They must strategically use an appropriate action as they hide, evade, or run from the Killer in order to get out of a chase alive. When a Killer won’t let up, Survivors can vault through windows to disorient, loop a Killer and waste time for other Survivors to finish repairing Generators, or stun a Killer by dropping a pallet on them.
Survivors will often have to perform numerous ‘Skill Checks’ when either repairing Generators, healing other Survivors, or when struggling while on the Hook. They must correctly succeed in skill checks, as failing often results in alerting the killer of their whereabouts in the form of a loud explosion sound from the Killers’ POV.
Killers
Killers play in the first-person view, requiring players to have a keen eye when hunting down Survivors. Each one has a special ability unique to them related to their character and backstory. Some examples would be how one is able to lay down traps for unsuspecting Survivors, ensnaring them and priming them up for injuries, one wields a chainsaw that allows them to sprint in one direction and instantly down any Survivor struck while it’s active, and one can throw deadly hatches from afar, denying any Survivors who seek to run away. Similar to Survivors, Killers can also equip up to four perks that give them additional powers or utility to triumph over the four Survivors.
Killers can see the location of all the Generators at all times, but are not aware as to which ones are being repaired (without certain Addons or Perks). They must follow scared crows that are startled from running Survivors or seek out their scratch marks, or follow the trail of blood left behind by injured survivors.
Dead by Daylight Story
The Entity, an all-powerful comic entity with the ability to go from several universes, has created an eternal deadly game from within The Fog. Across the many worlds, they have handpicked characters that they deemed interesting for their entertainment. Survivors and Killers alike, all with tragic backstories, are plucked from the brink of death to engage in an infinite nightmare more horrifying than hell itself. Every night, Survivors and Killers are forced to participate in a deadly game of cat and mouse as they enter the Purgatory known as The Fog. The Killer is tasked with finding the Survivors and sacrificing them to the Entity by maiming them on hooks, whereas Survivors are given only one way out – the exit gates powered by dead Generators.
Survivors must band together, every night, in order to escape the clutches of the Killer and displease the Entity, lest they be caught and be Dead by Daylight.
