Age of Mythology: Retold Gameplay
Age of Mythology: Retold revitalizes the core gameplay of the original, blending classic real-time strategy mechanics with enhanced features. Players engage in resource management, base-building, unit micromanagement, and a strategic rock-paper-scissors-style combat system where specific units counter others.
Central to the gameplay is the player's choice of a major god, which influences the progression of their civilization through different Ages. Each Age unlocks new technologies and abilities tied to the minor gods the player selects at each stage. This progression shapes the player's strategy, units, and abilities as they work toward achieving scenario-specific objectives or vying for dominance in multiplayer matches.
Players begin with a base from which they can gather resources, construct buildings, train units, and develop their economy. Units are divided into three categories: human units, elite heroes, and Myth Units. Heroes excel in combating Myth Units, while Myth Units are powerful beings drawn from mythology with unique abilities and specialized roles. Villager units are tasked with resource gathering and construction, while combat units are used for defense, offense, and raiding enemy settlements.
A standout feature is the integration of god powers, which players can deploy strategically to shift the tide of battle. These divine abilities range from destructive lightning strikes to healing waves or morale-boosting hymns. Some god powers require godly energy, accumulated by assigning villager units to worship at temples.
Age of Mythology: Retold Story
Age of Mythology: Retold features multiple story campaigns, each offering a unique perspective tied to different pantheons of gods.
In the Greek campaign, players follow Arkantos, an Atlantean admiral seeking to restore Poseidon's favor and defend Atlantis. His journey spans Greece, Egypt, and the Norse lands, where he allies with heroes like Ajax, Amanra, and Kastor, facing mythical creatures, vengeful gods, and dark forces along the way.
The Norse campaign shifts focus to Skuld, a warrior-turned-wanderer tasked with uniting the Norse clans to combat the chaos unleashed by the Cyclops Gargarensis. Her journey through the icy wilderness brings her face-to-face with figures from Norse mythology, including Loki, the trickster god, whose schemes add complexity to her mission.
The Atlantean campaign highlights Kastor, Arkantos's son, as he grapples with the aftermath of Atlantis’s turmoil. Seeking to rebuild and unify his people, Kastor finds himself entangled in a broader struggle involving the Titans, with old adversaries like Kronos's followers threatening to disrupt the world's fragile balance.
