Will There Be Another Dark Souls Game?

Probably At Some Point Down The Line

The Dark Souls trilogy is a genre-defining series that’s been critically acclaimed and still played to this day. However, FromSoftware hasn’t released a Dark Souls game in 8 years, and instead has been focusing on other titles like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Armored Core 6, and Elden Ring, with all three winning awards and two of them being crowned game of the year.

The series’ lack of content since Dark Souls 3’s last DLC in 2017 makes us wonder if we’ll ever get to play another game in the series. However, the answer to that isn’t a definitive yes or no. Dark Souls is owned by Bandai Namco but was created by Hidetaka Miyazaki. Miyazaki directed Dark Souls 1 and 3, but acted as a supervisor during Dark Souls 2 as he was occupied with Bloodborne at the time. As reported by Kotaku, Miyazaki outright said at a round table meeting in the Namco Bandai headquarters in Tokyo that Dark Souls 3 was the end of the franchise, for him at least. However, he stated that he wouldn’t stand in the way if someone else, like a staff member, would want to make a sequel to Dark Souls.

This means that if we ever do get a Dark Souls game in the future, Miyazaki won’t have a hand in it. Despite that, chances are high for a Dark Souls game being made at some point in the future. This is because of the game’s overwhelming popularity, and the fact that it’s owned by one of the biggest gaming companies in the world, Bandai Namco. It’s not far-fetched to think that a talented FromSoft developer would be given a shot to continue one of the classic game franchises of the 2010s.
