Everything We Know About Lords of the Fallen

Lords of the Fallen Story Plot

Image

Lords of the Fallen is set eons after vanquishing the demon lord Adyr in the previous 2014 game. Lords seemingly do not fall forever however, as the resurrection of Adyr draws near, and the realms are bound to experience another age of cruel tyranny. As one of the Dark Crusaders, you must journey through both the realms of the living and the dead and choose to carve a path of either light or dark.

Lords of the Fallen Gameplay

Image

Lords of the Fallen features fluid tactical combat that adopts elements from Soulslike games. Players wield both melee weapons and magic to engage in close-range and long-range combat. Standard attacks, ranged melee attacks, and magic skills can be mapped or set to keybinds, making the gameplay seamless and fast-paced.

There are three types of magic sorcery that can be mastered, with each having their own styles and requiring different catalysts to cast.

In this game, two realms are layered on top of each other, existing in parallel: The world of Axiom, the realm of the living, and Umbral, the realm of the dead. Players can use a magical lantern called the Umbral Lamp to peer into Umbral, but doing this makes you vulnerable to the inhabitants of the realm of the dead.

When a player dies, the game does not restart from the last checkpoint. Instead, you will be resurrected in Umbral to continue the fight, hoping to be able to return to the realm to Axiom. Crossing over to Umbral from Axiom using the Umbral Lamp will cost players 1 of 2 of their lives. If you die in the Umbral realm, you will respawn in the last savepoint and lose unspent XP. Savepoints are far and few in between in each region, but these can be crafted using materials collected from Umbral monsters.

Lords of the Fallen - What's The Buzz!?

Lords of the Fallen Search Trends

Image

With the increasing popularity and demand of Soulslike games, Lords of the Fallen had quickly found its place on players’ list of games to look out for. Almost inevitably, after Lords of the Fallen’s announcement at Gamescom Opening Night 2022, the game had garnered much interest and peaked on Google Trends during the first week of its announcement.

Lords of the Fallen has impressed players with the graphics and gameplay shown in its trailers, especially the two layered realms mechanics it’s incorporated into the game. It remains as one of the highly anticipated games throughout the year, experiencing another surge in Google searches with the release of its gameplay trailer in May 2023, and again with the release of an extended gameplay showcase in July 2023.

Lords of the Fallen’s Popularity Compared to Other Games

Image

We took three other games that are coming out in the same month as Lords of the Fallen, namely, Assassin's Creed Mirage, Super Mario Bros Wonder, and Alan Wake 2, and compared their search interest on Google to find out which of the four games is the most anticipated by the gaming community.

  • Blue = Lords of the Fallen
  • Red = Assassin's Creed Mirage
  • Yellow = Super Mario Bros Wonder
  • Green = Alan Wake 2

Lords of the Fallen
Lords of the Fallen comes in first place in this comparison. In a post-Elden Ring world, it’s not a surprise that more and more players are looking for other games in the Soulslike genre. After its announcement at Gamescom 2022 and the release of its gameplay trailers, the gaming community might have just found the game that will quench their thirst for another Soulslike in Lords of the Fallen.

Apart from the features and mechanics that have caught the attention of players, the Lords of the Fallen’s two player co-op seems to be another attractive point for players and adds to its ongoing popularity among the gaming community.

Assassin's Creed Mirage
Despite being one of the most popular game series to have ever been released, Assassin's Creed Mirage falls behind in second place in this comparison. As the game has been described as "going back to basics", the series sees its return to the series’ roots in terms of gameplay and length, playing more like an action-adventure rather than an open-world. A number of players think that the oversaturation of the game series is eventually going to lead to its downfall, and is likely a reason why Assassin's Creed Mirage has not generated as much search interest as one would expect from a long-standing game series.

Alan Wake 2
Alan Wake 2 created a lot of intrigue with the introduction of a new character, Mr. Door, and the tease of the game being more like a Resident Evil. There is still a lot in store for fans of Alan Wake as the game will unveil more about the title’s protagonist at this year’s coming Gamescom Opening Night. Fans are also patiently waiting for the announcement of a physical release of the game. We suspect that Alan Wake 2 might see a climb in search interests after Gamescom Night, but even then, it still might not outshine Lords of the Fallen and Assassin's Creed Mirage in terms of search popularity.

Super Mario Bros Wonder
Super Mario Bros Wonder takes last place in this comparison. The game generated massive search interest in the week it was announced in June 2023 at Nintendo Direct. However, the stacked line-up of games set to release in October and the fact that the game is only being released for Nintendo Switch can be reasons why Super Mario Bros Wonder is behind the three other games in this comparison.

Still, we suspect the game may start to trend more as the release date gets closer and Nintendo does more of a marketing push.

Lords of the Fallen Fan Reactions

Image
One user talked about how the Lords of the Fallen sequel seems to look good so far, noting that the game will definitely be on their radar despite disliking the original game.

Image
Another user commented on the intensity and complexity that Lords of the Fallen showed in its trailers and gameplay reveals, further expounding that the game might pose a real challenge for players.

Image
This user expressed their hopes for some tweaks and improvements to the combat as some hits didn’t look as didn’t look as impactful as they should, based on the gameplay videos.

Image
This user noted how Lords of the Fallen is looking to be a game they can look forward to. They also noted how the first game, being of the Souls genre, did not quite live up to what Dark Souls had to offer in comparison. But by the looks of things in recent gameplay releases, they think Lords of the Fallen will be a “sick” game.

Lords of the Fallen Hype Verdict

Image

Keep an Eye Out

While Lords of the Fallen has been continuously praised for what it has shown so far, players are still a bit skeptical on how it will do once it finally releases. Players have had their gripes on the first game but have seen great improvements in the sequel, based on what has been shown so far. At the same time, there have been players saying they’ll reserve their judgments until the game comes out, as it might not actually be the spectacle it has made itself to be in gameplay reveals and trailers.

So far though, Lords of the Fallen looks like it’s going to be a unique and promising experience with its impressive gothic art style, smooth combat, and dual realm mechanics. This game should definitely be on your radar if you are looking for a new Soulslike, and we hope it lives up to its already crazy hype.
