AI Was Only Used In Programming And Code, Li Says

Zenless Zone Zero’s producer Zhenyu Li revealed to Eurogamer in a recent interview that AI has been used in the game "program-wise to better smoothen the game process."

Li did not disclose exactly what was AI-generated, but he emphasized that the AI "only consists a small part of the programming, mostly to help the programming team to smoothen the production process" and to make the work more efficient.

AI has not been used at all in its art assets, as he shared that the Zenless Zone Zero (ZZZ) team "wants to create something from our own mind" in terms of art-related content, adding in that "this is something that the whole team believes in."

This non-usage of AI generation also extends to its voice-acting work, where the ZZZ team, like many other HoYoverse titles, continues the streak of recruiting skilled voice talents in a variety of languages.

miHoYo’s History With AI

miHoYo or HoYoverse is no stranger to using AI to streamline development in their games. They have done so in special cases, such as using the self-developed AI called Anti-Entropy to voice their virtual avatar named Lumi_N0va, and in their romance title Tears of Themis when the Chinese voice actor for Vyn Richter was unable to voice him for a limited-time event.

They also have used Nvidia’s Avatar Cloud Engine (ACE), which assists in generating facial animations for character creation. An interview by IGN in 2023 with the Honkai: Star Rail team revealed that they use this technology to "improve the facial appearance and behavioral patterns of characters in the game" while also "paying much attention to AI, especially its impact on the gaming industry."

With AI becoming ever so prevalent in the gaming industry, only time will tell if miHoYo will continue to explore it past the surface level.
