YouTube soft-launched its new in-app feature, "Playables," where users can play free arcade games directly within the video platform app. As announced today, YouTube's Playables is now being rolled out to a broader audience over the coming months after initial testing in select countries.

The Playables arcade will feature over 75 games that can be instantly played on PCs and mobile devices using the YouTube app. Playables allows users to share games with friends via the "More" menu and save their progress. Some of the launch titles include games such as Cut the Rope, Angry Birds Showdown, and Tomb of the Mask.

"YouTube Playables are a fun, interactive way to experience YouTube, with lightweight, entertaining games like Angry Birds Showdown, Words of Wonders, Cut the Rope, Tomb of the Mask, and Trivia Crack, among many others that you can play right now," YouTube said in its announcement post.

App Games' Models Over the Years

For Google, YouTube's parent company, this marked another step into the gaming industry. While Google has long been a player with the Google Play Store, it faced setbacks with the discontinuation of the cloud gaming service, Google Stadia, last year.

On the other hand, streaming platform Netflix, which has been offering mobile games since 2021, has seen limited engagement, with only about 1% of its user base interacting with its game offerings. Netflix has recently started testing games on the Apple TV as well, as it continues to explore its presence in the gaming industry.
