The 2023 Gaming Rollercoaster

Image

It’s no secret that this year has been a crazy roller coaster with its huge ups and downs. We’ve had a range of amazing games and big releases like Larian Studio’s Baldur’s Gate 3, Remedy Entertainment’s Alan Wake 2, Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and many more. However, this year also has the biggest number of layoffs in recent memory. With a total estimate of around 9000 people being laid off from various companies like BioWare, Embracer Group, Epic Games, Ubisoft, Bungie, and many more.

One of these companies was Hasbro, the parent company of Wizards of the Coast who own Dungeons & Dragons. The company laid off 1,100 people due to "weaker-than-expected toy sales" according to Hasbro CEO Christopher Cocks. With the recent success of Baldur’s Gate 3 and its effect to increase the popularity of D&D, it was not enough to save its toy sales from plummeting.

Warhammer 40K Maker Meets Their Financial Goals

In contrast or on the other table, Games Workshop, the creators of the Warhammer 40K tabletop franchise, was one of the companies that thrived and found success this year. The company was able to meet their financial goals as reported in their half-year trading report. As a result, Games Workshop will be giving out a total pool of £7.5 million to all of its staff members which amounts to £2500 each as an end-of-year bonus.

This isn’t necessarily a new thing as the company has always had this profit share scheme for a long time, as previously they gave out a pool of £4.5 million to their staff. While a full-half-year report is not yet available, the company reported to have earned £235 million or $300 million in revenue over the last six months which is an increase from the previous half-year of £212 million.

Making Moves Off The Table

Aside from its tabletop success, the franchise has seen its fair share of success in other media with the recent release of their first-ever CRPG with Rogue Trader, as well as their rumored live-action films.

With Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, they were able to make a successful first splash in the CRPG scene as a pretty good game overall with an emphasis on player narrative and deep gameplay. It serves as a great introduction to the Warhammer 40K universe.

Recently, it was reported in the official Warhammer community website that Games Workshop and Amazon reached an agreement to bring Warhammer 40K to the big screen, with well-known Warhammer fanatic Henry Cavill championing the projects. They teased that there may be both a movie and a TV series coming with the Warhammer 40K brand, and it's shaping up to be a big year for the franchise moving forward.
