The Future of Tomb Raider
Tomb Raider’s future will be revealed during the upcoming Game Awards 2025. As announced by TGA organizer Geoff Keighley on Twitter (X) on December 9, the classic treasure-hunting RPG will share details about its latest projects on Thursday night during the awards show.
The Tomb Raider franchise began in 1996 with the release of the original Tomb Raider game. Since then, there have been over 20 titles in the series, including the latest mainline entry with Shadow of the Tomb Raider in 2018.
While Keighley's post did not confirm a game, there is a chance the announcement is about the upcoming Prime Video live-action Tomb Raider series instead. According to the film and TV studio Story Kitchen, the series aims to "reinvent the franchise on a massive scale, interconnecting a new live-action television series and video games into a unified storytelling universe."
Possible New Game
It is also possible that the "future of Tomb Raider" will include multiple projects, which is why a new game would not be out of the question. Long-time series developer Crystal Dynamics looks to be the one to develop a new title, if ever, as they have previously hinted at in 2022.
In April 2022, the studio announced that it was working on a new Tomb Raider title. Not much is known about the project, but Crystal Dynamics noted that they will be using Unreal Engine 5 moving forward, marking a new era of games under their development.
However, recent layoffs at the studio have cast some uncertainty over the supposed upcoming Tomb Raider title. Following their latest round of reorganization in November 2025, Crystal Dynamics gave an update on LinkedIn regarding the company’s situation.
"To our players - as the realities of the industry continue to evolve, we've made these painful choices as a way to optimize the continued development of our flagship Tomb Raider game, as well as shaping the rest of the studio to make new games for the future," Crystal Dynamics stated.
