Maximizing Players’ Agency and Freedom of Choice

The Blood of Dawnwalker (TBOD) developers Rebel Wolves’ main goal is to maximize players’ agency and freedom of choice. In an interview in the latest issue of PC Gamer Magazine, TBOD Creative Director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz shared how the team developed the game's sandbox philosophy.

Tomaskiewicz was previously the Lead Quest Designer for Witcher 3, and he spoke about things they will implement in TBOD from their previous works. He explained, "So the core of it is maximizing players' agency and freedom of choice, while, at the same time delivering the high-quality narratives that we are known for crafting in the past."

He also mentioned in a previous interview the possibility of players killing off a lot of NPCs, some even VIPs. Although the game is heavily focused on its narrative, developers are still giving players the freedom to play the game how they see fit.

Dynamic World Will Not Wait For The Players

TBOD Design Director Daniel Sadowski gave insights on the game’s 30-day narrative sandbox experience. He pointed out that the team does not want the players to feel like their dynamic world is waiting for them to do something, "so both action and inaction in Dawnwalker have serious consequences."

Tomaszkiewicz highlighted the importance of the players’ choices in side quests as they may also affect other things in the game world. He hinted that "seemingly inconsequential, smaller activities in the world" could make a big impact in the story, although he has not specified any examples or how drastic these changes may be.

Rebel Wolves Not Affected By NetEase Layoffs

Rebel Wolves remain intact and unaffected by the recent NetEase cutbacks and layoffs. Co-owner of Rebel Wolves Tomasz Tinc posted on LinkedIn on February 24, 2025 the company’s status amidst the recent NetEase situation.

Despite the current happenings with NetEase, Tinc assured fans that "The development of our game is progressing steadily, and we're facing no financial issues." He explained further, "The Blood of Dawnwalker's production is fully funded, and we work alongside our partners and friends from Bandai Namco, our game's global publisher, to bring the first chapter of the Dawnwalker saga to life."

Tinc also clarified. "The vast majority of Rebel Wolves' ownership rests in the hands of Konrad Tomaszkiewicz and other studio co-owners, all of whom are employed by Rebel Wolves." He added, "NetEase is Rebel Wolves' minority shareholder"
This put many fans at ease and rumors spread that Rebel Wolves may be affected by the current situation with NetEase. With Tinc’s post, fans are now relieved that TBOD remained in development and will be progressing in the future.
