Valve says that the Steam Deck 2 is estimated to be in stores 2 to 3 years from now. Read on to learn more about why this is the case.

Steam Deck 2.0 Coming in 2 or 3 Years

Necessary Technology Not Yet Available

With Steam Deck OLED’s upcoming release in November, the company revealed that the Steam Deck 2.0 will come in about 2-3 years.

According to Yazan Aldehayyat, Valve’s hardware engineer, the long wait for the Steam Deck’s successor is tied to today’s technology not being advanced enough for a truly next-generation version of a Steam Deck. He went on to say that the first Steam Deck was made right when they realized that there’s enough GPU performance in a portable form to let people play Steam games on the go. "We would love for the trend of perf-per-watt to progress rapidly to do that, but it's not quite there yet." he added.

While technically, it is possible to make a next-gen Steam Deck with today’s technology, it would have to come at the expense of battery life or efficiency, which Valve does not want to do as per Valve Coder, Pierre-Loup Griffais. "I don't anticipate such a leap to be possible in the next couple of years, but we're still closely monitoring innovations in architectures and fabrication processes to see where things are going there."

While we wait for Steam Deck 2.0, the Steam Deck OLED will be the premiere portable gaming for gamers on the go. For more information about the Steam Deck OLED, visit our article that covers its release, key features, specs, and more.
