Sony Investigates Claims of Cyberattack On Insomniac
Information Being Auctioned for $2 Million in Bitcoin
Rhysida ransomware group claims to have stolen sensitive data from Insomniac Games, which includes the personal information of people involved. According to Cyber Daily, an Australian outlet, Rhysida posted some of the data as proof and is auctioning the entire set for around $2 million in Bitcoin. Sony is currently investigating the issue.
Data stolen reportedly includes sensitive information on Insomniac’s highly anticipated Wolverine game, various screenshots and character arts, and scans of the passports of Insomniac employees, including the one for Peter Parker’s voice actor in the Spider-Man games, Yuri Lowenthal.
As reported by Eurogamer, Sony is aware of the situation. They believe that only Insomniac has been cyber breached since they don’t have reason to believe that other divisions were affected.
Not The First Breach This Year
This isn’t the first time Sony has been successfully hacked, and it isn’t the first time this year either as there was a breach that impacted around 6,800 Sony employees last May. Eurogamer noted that Sony was among the many industry giants that were affected by the MOVEit hacks earlier this year.
The U.S. Department of Justice and the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency recently issued a joint cybersecurity alert, stating that Rhysida's successful attacks on large organizations are often due to companies not using Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) as an added security measure.
This incident highlights the increasing threats from hacker groups and calls for tighter security measures, especially for large mega corporations like Sony.
