Keanu Reeves Reportedly Voicing Shadow in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Movie
Sonic 3 Greatly Inspired by Sonic Adventure 2
As reported by news outlets The Hollywood Reporter and Variety, Keanu Reeves looks to join the cast of the third Sonic movie. According to reports, Reeves was tapped to voice Shadow, Sonic the Hedgehog's nemesis in the Sonic game series. Reeves will be joining a cast that includes Ben Schwartz as Sonic and Jim Carrey as the series antagonist, Dr. Robotnik.
Among the gaming community, Reeves is well known for voicing Johnny Silverhand in the action RPG Cyberpunk 2077. Widely renowned for portraying Neo, protagonist of cult classic film The Matrix, he has also voiced the character in the games Enter the Matrix and The Matrix Awakens.
Following a successful presentation at CinemaCon, where Paramount revealed footage from Sonic the Hedgehog 3, film director Jeff Fowler teased that the third movie took great inspiration from the Sonic Adventure 2 game, which introduced Shadow in 2001.
Shadow's introduction in the cinematic universe was hinted at in the previous Sonic movie, where he was shown to be cryogenically frozen at a mysterious facility. Known for his enigmatic persona and polarizing motivations, Shadow often served as both a rival and ally to Sonic and the series’ most well-known anti-hero.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is expected to arrive in theaters in December 2024. In addition to the movie sequel, Paramount is expanding the Sonic universe with a spin-off series titled "Knuckles," set to premiere on Paramount+.
