The Future of 3D and VR Gaming?

Samsung revealed at CES 2024 that they’re working on the Samsung 2D/3D Gaming Monitor (working title), which can switch between 2D and glasses-free 3D modes with the push of a button. Additionally, it can run VR games without a VR headset. Samsung stated that the monitor’s VR mode is compatible with existing VR content such as games and videos.

At the event, Samsung showcased the new tech, explaining how it works. There are two cameras built into the monitor, which track eye and head movement and optimize the 3D picture. The monitor is also equipped with a special UI for 3D browsing. The eye trackers are also responsible for its VR features that don’t require a headset.

Compatible with Steam VR and Other Existing Content Image

According to Samsung, this upcoming product is compatible with Steam VR, and is trying to continue making partnerships with unnamed “notable gaming publishers.”

It’s exciting to see how this will change the VR scene. However, I think that a key aspect of VR is the total immersion experience, which I think will be hard to pull off without the headset blocking off the outside world completely. Samsung mentioned that they will share more information on the monitor later this year.
