Resident Evil (1996), the first installment in Capcom's classic survival horror game franchise, is now available for purchase on GOG. This release brings new rendering options and various modern fixes, including improved cutscene timing, an enhanced video player, a better DirectX game renderer, and smoother game exit.

Additionally, the GOG release includes full support for modern controllers such as for the Xbox consoles, Playstation, Switch

Originally released in 1996 for the PlayStation 1, Resident Evil was ported to PC in 1997. Despite its iconic status, the original Resident Evil has not been widely available on modern PC storefronts. Currently, none of the original Resident Evil games are available for purchase on Steam.

The GOG version is based on the original 1997 PC port, which featured uncensored footage from the game's Japanese version and a full-color opening intro. Likewise, this version is the only version of Resident Evil that includes all uncensored full motion video (FMV) sequences, including the uncensored introduction.

Resident Evil follows the story of a special police unit investigating a series of bizarre murders on the outskirts of Raccoon City. It is set in the fictional Arklay Mountains, specifically within a mysterious mansion that serves as the primary location for most of the game.

The game features iconic RE characters such as Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield, members of the elite Special Tactics and Rescue Service (S.T.A.R.S.) Alpha Team, as well as, Albert Wesker. As Chris and Jill explore the mansion, they uncover clues about the Umbrella Corporation, a pharmaceutical company conducting illegal genetic experiments. These experiments led to the creation of the T-virus, a biological weapon that turns living creatures into zombies.
