Sony has reportedly granted AMD the bidding for the chip design of gaming giant's next flagship console, the PlayStation 6.
Sony and AMD Partner Once Again for PlayStation Console
People are Now Asking When PlayStation 6's Release Date Could Be
Sony's bid for the PlayStation 6's chip design and fabrication reportedly has gone to AMD, with Intel losing out to its rising competitor. According to Reuters, Intel and AMD were the two final bidders qualified to provide the chip design for Sony's next flagship console. AMD had already provided the chip designs and processor for the PS5, in tandem with Sony, and the gaming giant seems to be more than happy to stick with its previous manufacturing partner.
Furthermore, Reuters stated in their report that had Sony granted Intel the bid for PlayStation 6's chip, it "would have risked backwards compatibility"—a facet that greatly influenced contract discussions between Sony and Intel. Reuters further stated that the undertaking with Intel "would have been costly and taken engineering resources."
Though AMD declined to comment on the report, Intel gave a statement to the news site: "We strongly disagree with this characterization but are not going to comment about any current or potential customer conversations. We have a very healthy customer pipeline across both our product and foundry business, and we are squarely focused on innovating to meet their needs."
The news of the bid came several days after Sony’s announcement of the polarizing PS5 Pro console. While the latest iteration of the PS5 releases around the holidays in November, recent developments have begged the question: When is PlayStation's 6 release date?
Nothing official regarding the PlayStation 6 has been shared by Sony, so take this with a grain of salt. According to documents that were revealed during Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard acquisition court drama, the PlayStation 6 may come out sometime in 2028 at the earliest. And with the PS5 Pro's $700 price tag, it is speculated that the standard PS6's floor price could range anywhere between 500 to 600 bucks upwards if inflation permits. And with backward compatibility seemingly becoming a top priority for Sony, you might be able to play PS5 games on the PS6? Just like how you can play PS4 games on the PS5 Pro. But then again, nothing has been officially announced yet.
