Ubisoft Toronto Joins Development of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake

Ubisoft's announcement of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake's 2026 release window was made during the recently held Ubisoft Forward showcase event, accompanied by a new teaser trailer. The brief teaser featured a lit candle against the backdrop of an ancient Persian city, which stays lit as night goes to day. Interestingly, however, it seemed that the entire sequence is playing out in reverse, as the candle wax seeps back into the candle itself while the night-and-day cycle occurred. This could be a brief hint to The Sands of Time’s rewind mechanic.

Apart from this tidbit, there is not much to go on about the teaser trailer, however, it confirmed that the game is rated PEGI 16.

Ubisoft Montreal is now leading the development of the remake, with Ubisoft Toronto joining the charge, as announced earlier this month. Since its inception in 2010, Ubisoft Toronto has contributed to major Ubisoft franchises, including Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, Watch Dogs, and Splinter Cell. Producer at Ubisoft Montreal Noel Kechichian expressed optimism about the collaboration:

"There’s a rich history between our studios, and we couldn’t be happier to have Ubisoft Toronto join the project. Toronto has been an amazing partner for over a decade on a number of games, and this collaboration makes sure that we’re laying a robust foundation for our project and the journey ahead."

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake Releases in 2026 After Tumultuous Development Cycle

The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake has faced a tumultuous development journey. Originally announced at Ubisoft Forward in 2020, the game was initially slated for release in 2021. However, the project encountered significant setbacks.

While Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai were initially spearheading development of the remake, they were subsequently removed following negative reactions towards the first reveal of the game. The original developer, Ubisoft Montreal, was handed the reins, restarting the game's development from scratch. In April 2024, reports suggested that development had effectively restarted, further pushing back the game's release date. And now, here we are with the latest announcement that sets the remake's release for 2026.

It is currently not confirmed which platforms the remake is launching on. The original Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was released for the Game Boy Advance, PlayStation 2, GameCube, Xbox, and PC in 2003.

In addition to the remake news, Ubisoft also shared updates on other Prince of Persia titles: Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown's new upcoming story DLC, Mask of Darkness, will be released in September 2024. Moreover, The Rogue Prince of Persia received its first major free title update today.
