Pokémon GO Adds Morpeko and More, Hints at Dynamax and Gigantamax Coming to Game

New Season Expected to Focus on Galar Pokémon

In an update today, devs Niantic confirmed the upcoming addition of more Pokémon, including Morpeko, known for its form-changing ability, in Pokémon Go. In line with this announcement, fans speculated that the addition of these new 'mons possibly hints at the arrival of the Dynamax and Gigantamax mechanics in Pokémon GO. These mechanics were first introduced in Pokémon Sword and Shield, typically unique to the Galar region, and allow your 'mons to grow significantly in size and stats.

"Coming soon: Morpeko will charge into Pokémon GO, changing the way you battle! Certain Pokémon—like Morpeko—will be able to change form in battle by using a Charged Attack, unleashing new possibilities for you and your battle team." Niantic shared in their latest announcements. Additionally, they confirmed that the game's upcoming new season will feature "big changes, big battles, and…big Pokémon."

Further details were not disclosed; however, it seems that these "hungry" and "big" changes will soon be making their way into September for the new season. Pokémon fans have speculated that the introduction of Morpeko in Pokémon Go could be a precursor to the addition of other Pokémon like Mimikyu and Aegislash, as well as more interesting mechanics coming to the game.

The Dynamax and Gigantamax mechanics in Sword and Shield were limited to special locations called Power Spots, but it’s currently unknown whether a similar system will be used in Pokémon GO if these mechanics are indeed confirmed for the game. With the current Shared Skies season concluding on September 3, the next season’s theme is widely speculated to focus on Galar Pokémon, further amping up hype for the possible inclusion of the mechanics. However, it's important to note that these are merely speculations, and we expect more announcements as we learn how these changes might be implemented in the game.
