Action RPG Path of Exile 2 and arena shooter PVP Marvel Rivals both open to an immensely successful weekend. Read on to find out more about these amazing milestones!
Opening To A 500k Strong Audience
A Game-Packed Weekend
It’s been one jam-packed weekend with two incredibly successful game launches, with both games welcoming 500k players each on launch day. Free-to-play team-based PVP shooter arena Marvel Rivals opened its doors to players on December 6th, followed by action RPG Path of Exile 2 releasing in Early Access the day after, December 7th.
For starters, Path of Exile 2 opened to a solid player base, peaking at 578,569 players on Steam alone. Considering that the title is only on paid Early Access as of now, it’s an impressive feat. In terms of Twitch stats, there were over 1 million viewers of the category on its launch day. It was even reported to have broken down database site SteamDB for a while from the volume of its sheer popularity, following a humorous post from SteamDB themselves accusing the game of bringing down the site.
Even before its release, it already amassed over 1 million sales, and the number was quickly increasing just hours before servers were set to open. The unprecedented surge of new players buying the Early Access pass caused the development team to roll out a last-minute database upgrade to cater to all incoming traffic. However, despite the server expansion, players have still reported getting disconnected and facing login issues, with them waiting in queues to have a chance of stepping into the fray. It’s a testament to the fact just how highly anticipated the game was.

Marvel Rivals Also A Smash Hit On Launch
Path of Exile is not the only game with a smashing launch—Marvel Rivals has too! The team-based shooter title has already claimed its title as one of the biggest free-to-play game launches in the entire history of Steam, as seen on SteamDB. The game peaked at 480,990 players on Sunday in Steam alone, with players from consoles and Epic Games not yet counted. However, the official Marvel Rivals X (Twitter) posted that they’ve reached an incredible 10 million player milestone just 72 hours from launch, reaching players from all across the globe!
Right now, it also enjoys positive reception with a Mostly Positive rating from 34,664 reviews on Steam, 4.68 stars across 25,000 ratings on the PlayStation Store, and 4.6 stars on Epic Games.
Additionally, it is a live-service game—a genre that hasn’t been doing well this past year, with fellow live service titles like Concord, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, and most recently XDefiant failing to attract a solid player base. Concord was shuttered down just a mere two weeks after its release, and XDefiant is set for closure in 2025. At just three days old, Marvel Rivals is already at the top of its game and for sure will continue its success as time goes by.
