Sony Incoming Co-CEO Herman Hulst Addresses PlayStation's Day 1 PC Launch

PlayStation to Launch Live Service Games Simultaneously on PS5 and PC

PlayStation's announcement of its Day 1 PC launch for its live service games came as Sony’s incoming Co-CEO, Herman Hulst, presented the company’s new strategy, as initially reported by Tom Warren, senior editor at The Verge. Hulst explained that this strategy aligns with how PlayStation plans to handle its IPs across different media platforms. "Indeed we are bringing our titles to the PC platform and we have a dual approach here," Hulst said. "On the live service side we are releasing our titles simultaneously, so day and date, on PlayStation 5 and PC."

However, Hulst noted that the approach for single-player, narrative-driven games will differ. These titles will not be released on PC at the same time as their PlayStation counterparts. Instead, these games will be brought over to the PC later. "But with our tentpole titles, our single-player narrative-driven titles that are... as you saw in the presentation, the backbone of what PlayStation Studios has delivered in recent years and in our history. We take a more strategic approach and we introduce our great franchises to new audiences," Hulst explained.

As explained by Hulst, they aim to bring in more players on the PS console using this strategy, saying this approach would attract new players to the PlayStation ecosystem. "We have high hopes that we are actually able to bring new players into PlayStation at large, but into PlayStation platforms specifically," Hulst added.

Hulst also mentioned that this strategy extends to other media adaptations of PlayStation properties, such as television series and films. He cited the HBO adaptation of The Last of Us and the Gran Turismo film as examples of how expanding PlayStation's franchises into different media can attract new players to their games. "As you have seen with The Last of Us on HBO or Gran Turismo, the film, that brings in new players into our franchises," Hulst said.
