Path of Exile Phishing Scam on Steam Leads to MFA Requests from Players

Grinding Gear Games, the studio behind the action RPG Path of Exile, has warned players about a phishing incident on its official Steam page. Players were urged to take immediate action whilst calling on the studio for additional security measures.

PoE Phishing Claimed to Have Linked to 'Path of Exile 2 Beta Registrations'

Phishing, a common online scam, typically involves deceptive online content, emails, or websites that trick users into disclosing personal information or installing harmful software. In a message shared on Steam and social media platforms, Path of Exile (PoE) studio Grinding Gear Games informed players about a malicious news post containing a phishing link that appeared on the PoE Steam page from a compromised account.

While the studio didn't disclose details about the phishing post, players claimed on the Steam discussion thread that it directed to a fake registration page for a Path of Exile 2 beta test. The scam site was described as "pretty well disguised," and seemed to have demonstrated "higher effort than normal scam attempts," according to user Keijokainen.

Another user, kozee_, said that the link led to 'pathofexiie.com,' a misleading link purporting to be the official 'pathofexile.com' site. With the post quickly removed, players were advised to secure their accounts if they had followed the link or suspected any compromise.

Players on the game's various social media platforms have called for additional security measures, such as implementing multi-factor authentication within the Path of Exile login itself. "Multi factor authentication should be added to PoE . I hope to secure my account from hackers after spending so much on the supporter packs. I never want to get them deleted," urged one user on Path of Exile's Reddit announcement.
