Palworld hit a peak of 143,369 players yesterday, signaling a significant resurgence after several months of declining numbers. This spike can be attributed to the recent free update and the ongoing Steam Summer Sale.
Data from SteamDB reveals that Palworld's player count has surged dramatically in recent days. Previously, the game had been attracting around 30,000 players during peak times over the past month. However, beginning June 27th, the player count has been climbing which reached a peak of 143,369 at the time of writing. Although this is still a considerable drop from its peak of over 2.1 million players, it represents a notable recovery.
Since its Early Access release in January, Palworld made an immediate impact. Known for its unique "Pokemon with guns" gameplay, it sold an impressive 7 million copies within just five days. Although the initial surge was unsustainable, the game maintained a strong presence online. Despite consistent content updates from developer Pocketpair, the player base had been dwindling until now.
Steam Summer Sale and Palworld Update Looks to Cause Player Surge
Two primary factors seem to be driving the sudden increase in Palworld's player count. The first is the game's discounted price during the Steam Summer Sale, lowering it to $22.49, a 25% discount. This price cut has likely encouraged many hesitant gamers to purchase the game.
The second factor is the extensive new update, released for free, which adds significant new content. These combined factors have attracted new and previous players which led to a substantial boost in player numbers. Some of the updates can be found below:
⚫︎ New Island: Sakurajima
⚫︎ Player level cap increased to 55
⚫︎ New Stronghold: Oil Rig
⚫︎ New Resource: Crude Oil
⚫︎ New Raid: Blazamut Ryu

Despite its significant success, it's important to note that Palworld is still in Early Access and not yet a finished product. Pocketpair is expected to continue adding new content, providing players with ongoing new experiences. While the possibility of the game expanding to other platforms remains uncertain, there is speculation about a potential PlayStation port, although a Nintendo Switch version appears less likely at this time. The future development and expansion of Palworld will be something to watch in the coming months.
