Octopath Traveler 0 New Details and Latest Developer Interview
New Characters, Town-Building, and More

Octopath Traveler 0 reveals more details about its characters, town-building mechanics, and content to come. As posted on the game’s official news page on October 15, developer Square Enix shared more information about the game, starting with its main antagonist, Pardis III.
Similar to the original Octopath Traveler, Octopath Traveler 0 is set in the continent of Orsterra, which is plotted to be seized by the tyrannical monarch, Pardis III. He is described as "The absolute monarch who rules the Kingdom of Edoras, with Wealth, Power, and Fame all at his command."
As the Ringbearer, players are tasked with quelling his insatiable greed and putting an end to the countless wars spread across the nation. Aside from him, Square Enix also introduced four new playable companions that will aid the protagonist in their quest to save Orsterra.
These characters are: namely, Pius, a bishop of the Order of the Sacred Flame; Saoirse, a traveling dancer with extraordinary vocal talent; Carinda, a warm and friendly merchant; and Xerc, an eccentric scholar who researches soulstones.
Furthermore, new details about the game’s town-building were unveiled, which include the addition of buildings such as The Monster Arena, where players pit their captured monsters into battle and receive rewards, and The Museum, where players can revisit their memories through journals, listen to the game’s soundtrack, and read information about "treasures of legend" scattered around the continent.
Built From Scratch

In an interview with Inverse on October 14, Octopath Traveler 0 Producer Hirohito Suzuki and Director Yasuhiro Kidera shared how the game came to be. During the game’s reveal, Square Enix previously stated that it was heavily inspired by the series’ mobile game, OCTOPATH TRAVELER: Champions of the Continent.
Both Suzuki and Kidera were directly involved in the development of Champions of the Continent. However, Suzuki noted that while the core concepts may be the same, Octopath Traveler 0 was made from scratch.
He stated, "The way the experience is built is completely different. So even when it comes to the overall design or level designs, we essentially had to build things from scratch. And it really felt like we were rebuilding this game from the ground up."

Moreover, they also wanted to bring a new experience to the fans of Champions of the Continent by adding new features such as town-building. Suzuki said, "We felt that it was really important to ensure we were introducing new features to this game, for example, the town building. And making sure we were redesigning the story itself too, so that as many people as possible would be able to pick up this game and give it a try."
Initially, Champions of the Continent was designed to bring the original Octopath console experience to mobile users. With Octopath Traveler 0, the team wanted to bring the mobile experience and its new features back to consoles, as most fans wished for it to happen.
Suzuki admitted that bringing a mobile title to consoles was challenging because the overall design is built differently, which is why they felt that creating the game from the ground up was essential.

Kidera echoed the same sentiment and stated, "One thing that was true when it came to the mobile experience, or for mobile fans specifically, is that it was one where, rather than engaging with the gameplay in a literal sense, because of the format, you inevitably had to be on your phone screen for a very, very long time."
He also said that one of the mechanics they highlighted was the turn-based element, which they adjusted to fit well with the console iteration of Champions of the Continent. Suzuki said, "It’s a great thing that all these features that were beloved by fans are being brought to console."
Octopath Traveler 0 is set to release on December 5, 2025, on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. To stay up to date with the latest information about the game, check out our article below.
