Nexon to Shut Down Warhaven

Going Offline in April 2024

After a short 4-month stint in Early Access, Warhaven – Nexon’s medieval fantasy FPS multiplayer – will be closing its servers after failing to garner enough traction. Although initially planned for a full release in 2024 following its Early Access in September of the previous year, the game will shut down for good come April 5, 2024.

Warhaven Team Apologizes to Its Fans

News of the game’s imminent shutdown was shared through its official Steam Page, where the Warhaven team thanked its fans and players for their unwavering support in the face of the game’s apparent unpopularity.

"From the 1st alpha test in 2021 to the global early access in 2023, Warhaven has come this far, thanks to everyone's love and support," said the Warhaven Team in their announcement. "We want to express our gratitude for the love and care you have shown for Warhaven."

"To create a game that could be cherished and enjoyed over an extended period, we invested much consideration and effort," the announcement continued. "However, regrettably, we must bid our sincere farewell as of April 5, 2024. We apologize that we could not come to you with better news."

The Warhaven Team went on to confirm that charges for WP – Warhaven’s in-game currency – will be suspended as of the announcement’s posting, although further details will be revealed at a later date.

Warhaven’s Brief Stint in Retrospective

Though it had its fair share of fans, Warhaven proved unable to gather enough traction to be "popular" in its genre, at least not enough for Nexon to consider its continued run. The game was met with a lukewarm reception when its Early Access hit the platform, just barely scraping by with 58% of its players giving it a good review.

This only proved to be a downward spiral, as negative reviews eventually came in regarding the game’s poor balance and unfun mechanics. A few reviews also highlighted server and bot issues that plagued the game’s multiplayer – issues that made the game unplayable at times.

"The first playtest was the best incarnation of the game," said one reviewer who posted in light of the game’s shutdown. "It wasn't perfect, far from it. But it set the foundation [for] what could possibly be."

In retrospect, it was clear that Warhaven’s premise was never the issue. This was simply another case of a great idea executed poorly.
