Minecraft, the world's best-selling video, is finally getting a Netflix series in collaboration with animation studio WildBrain. Meanwhile, more news on the game trickles down following its 15th anniversary.
Netflix Announces New Minecraft Animated Series
In Collaboration with "Sonic Prime" Studio WildBrain
Netflix and Minecraft's Mojang Studios announced today that they are working on an animated Minecraft series. While specific plot details and a release date have yet to be revealed, Netflix said that the series "will feature an original story with new characters, showing the world of ‘Minecraft’ in a new light."
This CG-animated series is being developed by WildBrain, the studio known for its work on popular animated Netflix projects such as Sonic Prime, Ninjago: Dragons Rising, and "Carmen Sandiego. Netflix's new, upcoming Minecraft animated series adds to a growing list of Minecraft adaptations.
In addition to the animated series, a live-action Minecraft movie is also in development. Initially facing several production delays, the Minecraft movie is now set to be released on April 4, 2025. The movie boasts a star-studded Hollywood cast including Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and Jennifer Coolidge.
Minecraft Tricky Trials Update Releasing on June 13
The announcement of the animated series came on the heels of Minecraft's 15th anniversary celebration. After months of anticipation and minimal communication, Mojang confirmed today that The Tricky Trials update is set to roll out on June 13, 2024. This update introduces a boatload of new features, including several new mobs, Trial Chambers, Ominous Trials, new weapons, and more. The update will be available for both Minecraft: Bedrock Edition and Minecraft: Java Edition and launch simultaneously across Xbox, PC, PlayStation, Switch, Android, and iOS platforms.
"Trial Chambers are a new structure releasing as part of the update that are filled with traps, tricks, and treasures!" Mojang wrote in its announcement. "No one knows who built these sprawling copper structures (or if they do, they didn’t tell me!), but we do know what you’ll find inside them: a slew of new challenges, mobs to do battle with, rewards to claim, and blocks to build with."
