In a not-so-surprising move, Konami continues to uphold the region lock for the digital version of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Read on to learn more about the restriction and the statement made by Konami.
Konami Continues to Lock Players Out of Metal Gear Rising
Metal Gear Rising Revengeance Digital Version Remains Caged
On July 4, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance made its way to the online store of GOG (Good Old Games) complete with all of the DLCs released in the original game. However, it didn’t take long for certain versions of the game to be removed shortly after.
The following day, Konami issued a statement to Game*Spark indicating that the game will follow the same restrictions that the Steam version has, which means that the game will remain region locked on Asia. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance’s digital version will be unavailable for purchase in Japan on GOG and Steam.

To give context, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance was originally released all the way back in 2013 for the PS3. While it received other ports and was released on other platforms like Steam and Xbox 360, these versions were never released in the majority of Asia, including Japan. The only way to be able to play the game in Asia was to secure your own physical copy on the PS3.
The GOG release of the cult-classic Metal Gear Rising gave players false hope and left many with a bitter taste in their mouths, as many were looking forward to being able to play it. To sum it up, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance being available to all regions on GOG was a blunder made by Konami.
Possible Re-Release?
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is an action-adventure spin-off of the Metal Gear Solid series where players control the special agent turned cyborg ninja, Raiden. It was a far cry from the original series, which focused heavily on stealth and subterfuge. It is safe to say that the game garnered a cult following, and it was widely received as a great action game with tons of memorable moments and characters.
While the game continues to be locked for certain regions, Konami did release the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection, which included the first three games in the Metal Gear Solid franchise as a re-release in one bundle. It seems like an obvious move on Konami’s part to release the other games in the series, namely, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, all in one collection. This is all still purely speculation but with the prevalence of re-releases, remakes, and etc. with their latest foray being Metal Gear Solid Delta, Konami may be looking to re-release their previous Metal Gear titles in a new collection.
