Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 Director’s Criticism On The Outer Worlds 2
Lacking New Game Mechanics
Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 (KCD2) Director Daniel Vávra criticized Obsidian Entertainment for the lack of innovation in The Outer Worlds 2 (TOW2). In a Twitter (X) post on November 5, Vávra gave the game a 7 out of 10 despite having qualms about not having a new game mechanic.
Vavra, co-founder of KCD2's Warhorse Studios, is known for being involved in controversial scenarios when responding to criticism of his own games. This time, however, Vávra is the one being critical of one of the year's most anticipated titles.

He pointed out that, with 15 years and the budget that Obsidian had with Microsoft, they did not "take [The Outer Worlds’] proven but ancient formula somewhere new." Vávra mentioned that the studio was responsible for one of his favorite games ever, Fallout and New Vegas, which made him much more critical of the latest title.
KCD2’s director stated, "Can any of you think of a single new game mechanic in The Outer Worlds that wasn't already in Deus Ex or the original Fallout games more than 25 years ago? Unfortunately, I can't."
Vávra wished for a "living, simulated world" and "true non-linearity" that’s beyond "loot boxes, maintenance shafts, loading screens and level grinding in a static scripted world."

TOW2 has proven popular despite criticisms, with the community giving it "Mostly Positive" reviews on Steam. It also maintains a strong "Generally Favorable" Metacritic score of 84 among review sites and critics.
Here at Game8, we gave The Outer Worlds 2 a 90 out of 100 for expanding upon the first game of the series, making everything funnier, deeper, and far more polished. To know more about our thoughts on the game, check out our review below.
Mixed Fan Reactions

Fan reactions to Vávra's post were mixed, with one comment specifically blaming the game's lack of innovation on the departure of original Fallout: New Vegas team members from Obsidian. Vávra, however, stated that most key people from the original team were still part of the studio.
Another user highlighted TOW2’s Flaws system and that the game itself is mechanically solid. Vávra replied and said that Fallout had Traits with negative aspects, which makes Flaws not really a new mechanic.

One commenter claimed that the failures of The Outer Worlds 2 and other AAA games were the result of poor "bureaucratic decision-making," which leaves no room for creative or bold choices. This was the consensus among fans, and while many noted that the game does nothing out of the ordinary, it retained the "fun-factor" of the first TOW.
The Outer Worlds 2 is now available on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC. To stay up to date with the latest information about the game, check out our article below!
