Adamant on Using AI Within Bounds of Japanese Laws

CyberAgent's announcement of its image AI generation guideline, made public via the company’s Twitter (X) account last week, came after its internal release in February. This follows reports of CyberAgent’s initiative in October 2023 to leverage generative AI technology in animation and game development.

In an interview conducted by the company itself, Kazuyuki Oikawa of CA Creative Center and legal advisor Kentaro Horii elaborated on the company’s decision to implement its policies on generative AI use.

Oikawa noted the ambiguity surrounding image generation AI within current Japanese legislation and the lack of clarity in governmental directives. Acknowledging the potential negative impact of waiting for regulatory frameworks to be passed, CyberAgent opted to establish guidelines aimed at encouraging the safe use of AI within the company.

Oikawa emphasized that AI-generated images are not viewed as final products but rather as raw materials to assist with better efficiency in content creation processes. Furthermore, Horii elaborated that the guidelines’ focus is to prevent copyright infringement and address real-world issues arising from AI misuse.

"Although there are many uncertainties regarding legal issues, we believe that it is necessary to indicate as early as possible a set line that can be sorted out at this point so that it can be used safely and effectively with a sense of speed," Hori explained.

Stresses AI Will Not Replace Its Creators' Works

The company's goal is not to replace creators’ work with AI, Oikawa emphasized, rather, the company seeks to empower its creatives by integrating generative AI tools into existing workflows and enhancing creativity and corporate value. He added, "Our intention is to update the guidelines as appropriate in line with the changes of the times, and to continually improve them so that they are highly effective without turning them into mere tokens."
