During a press event, Foamstars producer Kosuke Okatani was asked by Video Game Chronicle if Foamstars incorporated the use of AI in different aspects of the game, to which he confirmed that it did.

Okatani, however, stated that The 4v4 online shooters' core elements, like the gameplay and “the things that make the game enjoyable”, are all “made by hand.” Nevertheless, the team aimed to explore the integration of AI, and he mentioned that AI constitutes approximately 0.01% or even less of the game as the team explored the integration of AI.

Square Enix clarified Okatani’s statement and said that AI played a role in crafting the in-game album covers for the music featured in the FOAMSTARS' soundtrack and all other aspects were created entirely by the development team. The team at Square Enix used Midjourney, a program that uses Artificial Intelligence to generate art from text prompts, to create abstract images of “the final album covers players will see in the game.”

Only a few weeks ago, Square Enix President Takashi Kiryu shared his vision for the company's strategy in 2024 through his annual New Year's Letter. In the letter, he conveyed his determination to actively incorporate the use of AI in their games.

Foamstars, an upcoming Square Enix game exclusive to the PS4 and PS5 platforms, offers a thrilling 4v4 shooting experience. In this game, players engage in foam-filled, intense battles within groups of 2, selecting their favorite characters like Soa. The game features two modes: Smash the Star, where the objective is to eliminate the enemy team's best player, and Happy Bath Survival, an arena-based battle where players aim to knock opponents out of the arena.

Early beta tests were distributed, and users have drawn comparisons between Foamstars and Splatoon due to shared gameplay dynamics and artistic features, such as using weapons to cover the area with color.

The game has since been confirmed to be released on February 6, 2024.
