FF16 Developers Could Add Playable Jill and Cid If PC Sales Go Well

Coming off the back of the announcement of two blockbuster DLC announcements for Final Fantasy 16(FF16), director Naoki Yoshida(Yoshi-P) and other important key members sat down with Japanese video game magazine publication Famitsu for an interview. One detail that caught the eye of many was the future possibility of other playable characters being implemented.

The actual question raised was if FF16 would ever receive any FF14 collaborations, as both games share the same director and producer in Yoshi-P. He answered that if PC sales were to become successful, adding other playable characters such as Jill or Cid “would be more interesting,” instead of using the additional funds to implement collaborations such as FF14. Jill and Cid were mentioned as off-the-cuff examples, so it might be safe to assume that other characters could also be considered to be made playable.

At the end of the day, these are all conjectures, and no official content has been revealed or planned besides the two DLCs and the upcoming PC port of FF16.

FF15 Added Playable Characters After Release

Image

Adding other playable characters after a mainline Final Fantasy release won’t be the series’ first, as Final Fantasy 15 (FF15) did the same with its “WINDOWS EDITION” for PC, and “ROYAL EDITION” for consoles. FF15 on its initial release only had one playable character, which was a very big departure from the franchise’s multiple-party-member formula. Gamers were only able to play as the protagonist Noctis, accompanied by his three friends who were all controlled by AI.

Afterwards, a DLC for the game was released featuring playable versions of his friends. All DLC were then compiled and re-released as the aforementioned FF15 editions, where they finally featured the ability to play and switch between all four friends in battle.

FF16 Continues the modern trend of having only one playable character at release in its protagonist, Clive. With the possibility of other playable characters being added, there is no telling who or how many characters will be made playable. Jill and Cid are among fan favorites, while others are clamoring to play as Dion as well.

The implementation of gameplay itself is also up in the air, as FF16 is a notoriously action-heavy game. Will it share a party-switching system similar to FF15 or the more recent FF7 Remakes? Or will the new playable characters have their own DLC that focuses on their own story and combat? Nothing is certain, but as big fans of Final Fantasy, we cannot wait to see what the future of the franchise holds.
