Elder Scrolls Online is Successful Due to Refusing to Layoff Personnel
Quarterly Earnings Don’t Tell the Full Story
In a LinkedIn post regarding Elder Scrolls Online’s (ESO) success, where it has seen "nearly $2 billion in customer spend since launch," previous ZeniMax Lead Producer Daniel Beahn reposted his sentiments about the game’s success. Beahn credits the success of the game to previous ZeniMax CEO Robert Altman, saying: "I spent 20% of my life working on this game. It owes it’s success to Robert Altman’s willingness to ignore quarterly results in favor of the long term." "His firm belief that ZeniMax was a family and unless all other options have been exhausted you don’t lay off family members." Beahn added.
He further sang praises to Altman, saying that "2 BILLION Dollars is a big pile of cash. That is what would have been left on the table if Robert had been focused on quarterly earnings."
Elder Scrolls Online Earns Almost $2 Billion From Player Spending
Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) Game Director Matt Firor stated that the MMO has already generated approximately $2 billion from player spending. This was shared by Firor during a panel discussion at GDC (Game Developers Conference) 2024 entitled "10 Years in Tamriel: Success of The Elder Scrolls Online," where he also detailed the game’s history throughout its 10-year lifespan.
The discussion showcased the highlights and various decision points, like the decision to drop the subscription fee entirely, the rebranding to Tamriel Unlimited, and many more. He ends the panel by showcasing the milestones and achievements that the team has made since the beginning of their development of the MMO 17 years ago.
