In his recent blog post, TV writer and "Game of Thrones" creator, George R.R. Martin wrote, "Oh, and about those rumors you may have heard about a feature film or television series based on ELDEN RING… I have nothing to say. Not a word, nope, not a thing, I know nothing, you never heard a peep from me, mum mum mum. What rumor?" This cheeky comment ignited speculation regarding Elden Ring making its way to the big or small screen, as Martin is known to contribute to Elden Ring's worldbuilding.

While Martin’s comments stop short of confirming any adaptation, they coincide with publisher Bandai Namco’s strategy to expand the Elden Ring brand beyond the game itself. The franchise is already branching out with a mobile game spinoff in development and a few manga adaptations. Additionally, developer FromSoftware’s parent company, Kadokawa Corporation, is known for producing anime, which opens up more possibilities for Elden Ring adaptations.

Elden Ring has been a monumental success. The base game has sold over 25 million units, and its expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, sold over 5 million units in just its first three days of launch last week. Both have received universal critical acclaim. The studio is renowned for its challenging games, like Dark Souls and Bloodborne, and an adaptation could bring the IP to a new audience, such as in the case of Fallout with its Amazon series adaptation.

"I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, a movie for example," Elden Ring creator and director Hidetaka Miyazaki told The Guardian in a recent interview. "But I don’t think myself, or FromSoftware, have the knowledge or ability to produce something in a different medium. So that’s where a very strong partner would come into play. We’d have to build a lot of trust and agreement on whatever it is we’re trying to achieve, but there’s interest, for sure."
