Elden Ring DLC Is Bigger Than Imagined

Welcome Back To The Lands Between

With the game releasing on June 21, it’s confirmed—Elden Ring’s upcoming DLC titled Shadow of the Erdtree is going to be huge and entirely packed full of content. And that’s because FromSoftware’s president, Hidetaka Miyazaki wanted players to "experience that sense of discovery, and that sense of wonder and exploration again."

Shadow of the Erdtree has been in the making for a little over two years and will take place in an entirely new region called the Land of Shadow. It’s well-made and more intricate than the original map was. Normal-looking crevices between a building and a rock face may hide paths invisible to the naked eye, leading you to a whole different part of the map. For that to happen, the map itself is also made to be massive, as FromSoftware has previously hinted that the DLC area will be roughly the size of Limgrave, even a little bigger. "How dense this map is, and the ratio of legacy dungeon to open field areas, and how they intertwine. This is something we wanted to explore anew in the DLC: In terms of recapturing that sense of scale but in a slightly different way with a slightly different granularity," said Miyazaki.

New Weapons And More Bosses To Fight

An insider preview of the DLC on the PlayStation blog teased that the expansion will feature 100 new weapons and more than 10 main boss fights, plus additional side bosses. In addition to the base game weapons, eight brand-new weapon types will be found within the new region. While there have been no specific details as to what those types would be, the preview featured the Martial Arts weapon type. This weapon class makes use of the Tarnished’s fists, dealing damage with heavy punches and kicks.

Two of the new main bosses were also previewed in the hands-on session, namely the agile Devine Beast Dancing Lion in the Belurat Tower Settlement and the magician Twin Moon Knight in Castle Ensis. As with any soulslike, both opponents move quickly and offer thrilling fights, said Eric Whelan in the PlayStation Blog. "Players should be prepared to get very familiar with that dodge button."

With all that content, Shadow of the Erdtree aims to give a familiar but wholly new experience to returning players, while also offering an additional myriad of things to do and explore for those newer players.
