Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined Allows Two Vocations At Once

DQ7R Party Reaching Out

Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined features a new Moonlighting mechanic that revamps the vocation system. Check out what’s new with the latest Adventure Log video and what the developers focused on for the remake.

Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined Latest Adventure Log and Developer Interview

Improved Vocational Experiences

Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined (DQ7R) will feature new and improved job classifications, overhauled to best fit the game’s modernity. As detailed on DQ7R’s Adventure Log Part 3, posted on January 30, the upcoming RPG title ups the ante with the introduction of Moonlighting.

Previous versions of the game featured different iterations of the vocation system, with each remake offering a unique twist on how players master and retain skills. For DQ7R, a new function called "Moonlighting" will allow players to equip two vocations at once, something never before seen in the franchise.

Characters will gain access to the skills, spells, and passive bonuses of both equipped vocations. Their attributes are calculated by combining modifiers from both jobs, producing specialized builds.

Field Attacks, Auto-Battling, and More

DQ7R Field Attack

Aside from the new vocation system, Adventure Log Part 3 also mentioned some new features that DQ7R will feature. This includes Field Attacks, which streamline grinding by allowing players to strike weaker enemies on the overworld and claim their experience instantly.

Another highlight showcased is the Auto-Battle system, which accelerates combat pacing by offering multiple gameplay speeds. This feature allows players to automate battles entirely, providing a convenient solution for hands-off grinding.

Other mechanics outlined include a dynamic party-swapping system for mid-battle rotations and a rare loot mechanic, where defeating formidable foes yields high-tier rewards that offer significant gameplay advantages.

Making The Remake "Nostalgic, Yet Innovative"

DQ7R Changing Vocations

It has been over 25 years since Dragon Quest VII was first released, and the developers at Square Enix sought to reimagine it for modern audiences. In a PlayStation Blog feature published on January 29, DQ7R Producer Takeshi Ichikawa offered a behind-the-scenes look at the team's creative approach to remaking this RPG classic.

According to him, they focused on making DQ7R feel "nostalgic, yet innovative" while adding "new touches that we thought were fitting as the series’ latest installment." With this in mind, they also decided to condense certain parts of the story and introduce new segments that would feel more impactful for the narrative.

DQ7R Hero Accepting The Hand

Overall, Ichikawa emphasized that although DQ7R was made to modernize their timeless title, the developers were very mindful of their long-time fans and ensured that the essence of the original Dragon Quest games was felt throughout the game. "We made sure to preserve the classic feel and core narrative, so I think many of the cutscenes will bring back a lot of emotions and memories from their original playthroughs," he said.

Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined launches for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and Steam on February 7, 2025. To stay up to date with the latest news on the game, check out our article below!
