BioWare Renames Next Dragon Age Title to "The Veilguard"
New Working Title Aligns with the Game's Vision
BioWare announced that the next installment in the Dragon Age series will be titled Dragon Age: The Veilguard, changing from its previously announced name, Dragon Age: Dreadwolf. This name change comes ahead of a gameplay reveal presentation next week, on June 11, where fans will get their first look at the new game.
Initially teased in 2018 and named Dragon Age: Dreadwolf in 2022, the game's title was changed to better reflect its focus on character-driven narratives, according to BioWare. The studio explained that the new title, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, captures the game's focus on companions and their stories within the game. "The previous name didn’t show just how strongly we feel about our new heroes, their stories, and how you’ll need to bring them together to save all of Thedas,” the studio stated in a blog post."
BioWare said that the heart of The Veilguard lies in its characters. Players will unite a team of seven unique companions, each with deep and compelling storylines. The decisions made by players will significantly impact their relationships with these characters and influence their companions' lives and fates. "This game is about you and your companions – a group that you must rally to fight by your side," said BioWare General Manager Gary McKay in an interview with IGN.
Companionship and Interaction Have Significant Impact
While BioWare did not delve and reveal all the companions in the upcoming game just yet, McKay hyped up vastly rich backstories and the depth of player interactions. The Veilguard will allow players to form unique connections with their chosen companions, including romantic relationships. McKay stated, "We’ve created a story where you can impact the world and the companions that surround you. Player agency is important to the Dragon Age: The Veilguard experience."
"We spent a lot of time making our companions feel authentic based on their own unique experiences within this larger fantasy world," he shared in the interview, "which in turn makes the relationships you form with them feel even more meaningful. We’ve tapped into Dragon Age’s deep lore and explored its most iconic factions to bring each of the seven companions and their stories to life."
Dragon Age: The Veilguard Gameplay Reveal on June 11
The gameplay reveal, scheduled on June 11 at 8:00am PT on the Dragon Age YouTube channel, will feature 15 minutes of footage from the game’s opening moments. McKay noted that combat is a major focus in The Veilguard, with a new ability wheel designed to enhance strategic elements. This feature allows players to pause the action, plan their next move, and utilize the unique powers and abilities of their two companions in battle. "The ability wheel opens up a huge amount of strategic possibilities," McKay explained. "We think we’ve found an exciting balance between fun, fluidity and strategy for every encounter."
