New Dungeons and Dragons Game In the Works
To Feature Co-op, Survival, Action RPG, and Life Simulation Elements
Yesterday on March 14, 2024, Gameloft issued a press release announcing that they have acquired the license of the "World’s greatest roleplaying game – Dungeons & Dragons" to develop and publish a video game to be released on PC and console. The deal was accomplished with DnD IP Holders Wizards of the Coast. Development will be handled by Gameloft Montreal, their Canadian branch that handled the development of Disney Dreamlight Valley, LEGO Star Wars Castaways, and numerous Dungeon Hunter games.
The game will be set in the Forgotten Realms of the Dungeons & Dragons universe, and "will bring unique cooperative gameplay built around an innovative hybrid of survival, life simulation and action RPG." The game will blend the extensive lore of DnD and the difficult objectives of the survival genre that will result in dangerous campaigns where only those with strong resilience and camaraderie can withstand.
Gameloft Montreal’s Executive Producer Lee Kaburis shares that they are honored to be working with Wizards of the Coast in developing "a completely new experience in the Dungeons & Dragons universe." Creator Director Marc-Andre Deslongchamps adds, " Making friends, both on and off the table, has always been a core Dungeons & Dragons value and it is our goal."
Both Kaburis and Deslongchamps express their enthusiasm for the project, sharing both of them, along with the development team, have been big long-time fans of the RPG, and are already hard at work to bring to life their concept into an experience filled with "emergent gameplay and shared narrative that can be both enjoyed by newcomers and tabletop master alike."
Eugene Evans, Wizards of the Coast SVP of Digital Strategy and Licensing, rounds off the press release by affirming their trust in Gameloft. " Our Partnership with Gameloft is a prime illustration of our strategy. Given their impressive record building incredible new experiences with major IPs combined with their passion for D&D and vision for this game, we are confident they will create an experience that will delight fans worldwide."
Not The Only DnD Game Being Developed
With the successful release and overwhelmingly positive reception of the most recent DnD-inspired video game Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s no wonder why Wizards are venturing more into the gaming landscape.
Gameloft’s future title isn’t the only DnD game currently being developed. Starbreeze, the creators of the heist-simulator games Payday, announced late last year that they have started development with a Dungeons and Dragons game codenamed "Project Baxter" that is set to be released in 2026.
No doubt BG3’s success played a critical role in these recent slew of collaborations, as it showed that the tabletop RPG’s format can be enjoyed by a wide majority of gamers as long as there is enjoyment and fun to be had.
