NetEase Games has pulled back the curtain on Destiny: Rising, a new entry into the Destiny universe tailored exclusively for mobile platforms. Read on to learn more about the game and its upcoming closed alpha test.

Destiny: Rising Will Include New Characters and Gameplay

Destiny: Rising Closed Alpha Test Starts in November 1, 2024

Amidst speculations and leaks, NetEase Games has officially unveiled Destiny: Rising: a free-to-play mobile RPG shooter set in an alternate timeline within the Destiny universe. While the world may look familiar to veterans of the series, Rising takes players through a post-apocalyptic Earth struggling to rebuild after "The Collapse."

"With Destiny: Rising, NetEase Games is honored to partner with Bungie to deliver a Destiny-caliber experience to mobile devices," said Ethan Wang, Senior Vice President at NetEase, in a press release on the game’s website, dated October 14, 2024. "Destiny is an incredible franchise with a passionate and dedicated global fanbase. As huge fans ourselves, we are humbled and thrilled for the opportunity to bring gamers an action packed RPG shooter set within the Destiny Universe."

Unlike its mainline predecessors, Destiny: Rising isn’t confined to the usual Titan, Hunter, and Warlock classes. Instead, the game will have a roster of hero characters, each equipped with their own special abilities, which positions it as a "hero shooter" in a market already oversaturated with such games.

"For over a decade, we have built this universe to contain many unique and wonderful stories,"said Terry Redfield, creative lead at Bungie. "and we are excited to see mobile gamers be able to experience this new take on the Destiny universe from the creative team at NetEase."

According to the game’s Developer Preview, the backdrop of Destiny: Rising is set during the early rise of humanity’s last city, post-Dark Age, following the guidance of Iron Lords. The storyline seems to explore a time when the first Lightbearers are struggling to grasp their newfound powers and defend Earth from alien threats. In Rising, players will be able to explore new locations, including Jiangshi and the expanse of the Red Sea Rift.

In terms of gameplay, Destiny: Rising offers both PvE and PvP modes. Players can engage in co-op missions, six-player strikes, and larger raiders, with a focus on bite-sized content better suited for mobile gamers. However, if you’re not a fan of touch controls, don’t worry; the game’s website says that Rising is compatible with smartphone controllers for those who prefer a more console-like experience.

Moreover, there will be a new weapon type—a crossbow—which adds an extra layer of novelty to the universe’s already vast arsenal. Notably, familiar enemies like the Hive, Fallen, and Vex will make a return in the game.

Rising will also introduce third-person gameplay alongside the traditional first-person perspective found in previous Destiny titles. Third-person was previously restricted to specific weapons and gear in the mainline games, but Rising fully embraces this viewpoint.

However, the elephant in the room is the question of microtransactions. Given NetEase’s track record with Diablo Immortal—another major mobile RPG that developed in partnership with NetEase that drew flak due to its monetization practices—it’s understandable to be cautious. Although details on in-game purchases have yet to be confirmed, it seems likely that Destiny: Rising will adopt a similar model since it is free-to-play. Many speculate that cosmetics will play a major role, but some form of power progression tied to spending could be in play.

Based on the game's Developer Preview and its mobile-centric design, Destiny: Rising may aim to attract a wider mobile gaming audience. However, it remains uncertain whether this new entry will successfully establish its own niche or encounter resistance from existing fans.

Regardless, the game’s FAQ states that "a good part of the main campaign… along with at least one map for all game modes" will be made available in the alpha test scheduled for November 1, 2024, for players in the United States and Canada, with no mention of other regions at the time of writing.

Destiny: Rising will be available for Android and iOS devices. Anyone can pre-register on the game’s website for the closed alpha test, but only a select group of pre-registrants will be randomly chosen to participate. There will also be specific criteria to meet for eligibility.
