Following a direct call out on social media, Destiny 2 developer Bungie has stated that it will duly compensate and give credit to a fan artist whose work was seemingly used in official merch.

Bungie Compensates Destiny 2 Fan Artist for Ace of Spades Nerf Design

Due Credits Will Be Given, Situation Resolved Amicably

Destiny 2 developer Bungie stated that it will give due credit and compensation to an artist after the studio was called out on Twitter (X) by "Tofu Rabbit," the artist who has claimed that her work had been directly copied by Bungie. The illustration in question was featured in the "NERF LMTD Destiny 2 Ace of Spades Blaster" gun merch from Bungie and manufacturer Hasbro.

"We've investigated this with our partner NERF," the Destiny 2 team said on Twitter (X), "We are currently in contact with the artist to make sure they are compensated and credited for their incredible artwork." Just a few days before Bungie had given out a statement, Tofu Rabbit had put the company on blast on social media.

Along with side-by-side comparisons of their work and the Nerf gun, the artist tweeted out, "soo, the NERF ace of spades DIRECTLY lifts a commission i did in 2015. This is not 'similar' or a coincidence, you can see my same brush strokes and scratches/smudges." In a follow-up tweet, the artist mentioned that the matter was being resolved amicably. "I want to say once again, people at Bungie and especially the CM who contacted me have been incredibly nice and professional," she shared. "To everyone who helped getting the word out to the right people, thank you."

Notably however, this isn't the first time Bungie had been embroiled in such disputes over the plagiarism or use of fan art. One such example would be an incident that came to light nearly three years ago, when a social media user pointed out that a freelancer's fan art had been used in one of the game's official trailers.

User @TheExoticGuard_ posted on a Twitter (X) thread: "I'm not one to make a whole stinker and it's most likely that this was a mere accident but did @Bungie used @relay314's Xivu Arath fan art for their @DestinyTheGame #TheWitchQueen detective wall trailer?" In a follow-up, they confirmed that the situation had been resolved with Bungie.

Destiny 2 10th Anniversary Legend Title Receives Fan Backlash

In other related news, Bungie said it will roll out a fix after the Destiny 2 player community voiced out their frustrations regarding a recent update to mark the game's 10th anniversary. "We've heard your feedback on the Skywatch Engrams and we are planning to boost enemy density in our next update," Bungie said.

The dev's statement came after widespread backlash pointing out that getting rewards takes an unfair, disproportionate amount of grinding. At the heart of the it was the triumph called "Accidental Generosity" which fans linked to punishing RNG and slow drop rates. One player shared their experience on the Destiny reddit server, saying, "I have no problem grinding but this is insane. Sitting in skywatch for literal hours while 2 enemies spawn waiting for 20 engrams is unrealistic."
