Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Cast Suggests Motion Capture Category
Highlighting Motion Capture Artists

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s cast is suggesting an awards category for motion capture artists. After the game received 12 nominations for The Game Awards 2025, they hope to highlight the significance of motion capture with their increased exposure.
"It needs to happen," declared Aliona Baranova, cast member of Clair Obscur and former motion capture director of Baldur’s Gate 3, during an interview with VGC. "I posted about it online the other day, and some people were questioning like, how would we do it? I don’t know, they can figure it out. We need to do it because there are these fantastic mocap performances going on."

As technology and software continue to advance, video games are increasingly able to showcase more detailed expressions and actions through motion capture. However, the cast points out that studios often prefer to keep aspects of their development process, including motion capture techniques, under wraps.
"It’s been decades of actors going in, doing the mocap, and then someone else’s voice is popped on top, and those mocap performers just disappear. I forgot that. Nobody knows about them." added Baranova.
Furthermore, the cast emphasized the importance of behind-the-scenes footage of motion capture actors to showcase their hard work. They often feel that these actors go into obscurity after a project, since the voice acting cast typically gets more recognition when playing the roles of characters.
Sharing Credit with Supporting Roles

This sentiment is shared by the lead roles. Charlie Cox, who voices Gustave in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, insisted on sharing the spotlight with Maxence Cazorla, the French actor who managed most of the character's motion capture.
"So any nomination or any credit I get, I really have to give to him. I believe that the performance of that character is really down to him, and my voice was just part of that process." said Cox, at the La Conve 64 event in Mexico.
Other cast members have similar thoughts on the matter; they also hope to expand the variety of categories for supporting roles in future game awards and shows. Thanks to the game's heightened popularity, they’re aiming to spread awareness in supporting their fellow actors.
